Brake Pad Sensor

I have a new set of front pads and disks put on the car this morning and am seeing that the service indicator that tells me how long they have got left till they need replacing is showing the same as it did BEFORE they were changed.

So on the grounds that I don't believe for one moment that the dealer hasn't actually replaced them, is the service countdown something that would need to be reset by the dealer after he had changed the pads (when the rears were replaced the countdown was returned to 50,000) or is the service indicator intelligent and actually measures the thickness of the remaining pad.

My guess is that somebody has forgotten to press the reset button but a quick sanity check would be useful before I call them up in the morning.

Thanks

have a look at the pads, it should be easy enough to see how thick they are

most probably the reset wasnt done.

Well they were not that thin to start with.

To be fair, I have no question on if the work has been done or not but need to understand why the counter is still showing 44k (the same as when it went in) when the back ones reset to 50k miles when they were changed

.. they never did the reset

If you´re convinced the work was actually done (should be easy enough to see new discs are fitted) then just ask for the brakes to be reset..

Or diy.

Is yours fitted with Idrive ?

Check if they have replaced the sensor. If they haven't you probably won't be able to reset it. If the sensor has been changed you can reset it yourself. See this thread:

Why did you go for pads if the counter showed 44k???

seems odd.

It's the strangest thing. Only a few weeks before the lease is up (complete with maintenance package) and this strange noise suddenly started coming from the front end so my dealer had a good look and advised me the best course of action was new pads and disks.

So it's looking like they forgot to reset the thing so as it has to go back in again next week for the tracking I will get them do finish the job.

Thanks

Well I got the answer to both my questions.

1. Yes they had forgotten to reset it. Looking at the pads, disk and very unrusty hubs on the front wheels there is no question the work has been done.

2. It's not and entirely manual process.

Apparently when the pad (and sensor) are renewed, the counter is reset by the dealer (normally 50k miles).

But

When the pad wears down enough to hit the first part of the sensor on the pad, the car then works out how many miles have gone by and then reworks out how many miles it thinks are left on the pad. This then continues until the pad hits the point where the sensor says "change me now".

So when the car is back in for tracking next week it's getting reset.
