91 Octane + Meth goes 118mph

I was very anxious to do some instrumented test runs with the basic BMS/CM Meth kit. I did 19 qtr mile test runs this morning to verify any differences.

First I did my baseline run on my regular daily map#7

12.6 at 114.9mph (2.1 60'. 0-60 4.2 sec) 120F IAT at the end of the run

Best run on Meth/91 octane on map#7
12.4 at 118.2.mph (2.1 60'. 0-60 4.1 sec) 82F IAT at the end of the run.

Map #10 on Meth/91 octane.
12.4 at 118.5mph (2.2 60'. 0-60 4.2 sec) 16.4psi peak boost.

What is nice is I don't hear any trace ping even during the shifts, etc.
The runs even being minutes apart were pretty darn consistant.

Seems to get about a 35-40F IAT temp reduction.

I used a silicone elbow to mount the injector. Seems to fit nicely.

The biggest pain was grinding off the OEM elbow clamp. Wondering if there will be a way to source the same clamp, as the elbow assembly is listed as one complete assembly in the BMW parts catalog.

I made my own aluminum bracket to mount the meth solenoid on an already existing stud coming out of the inner fender area sheet metal. I measured for voltage drop, and resistance, and it turns out to be a nice way to ground the solenoid to its own bracket. (less wiring).

I also simplified wiring by soldering the other end of the solenoid wire directly Normally Open tab of the boost switch. Still leaving plenty of room to slide on the connector for the pump power wire.

The inside installation was just temporary, as I was primarily interested in getting some test numbers before doing a complex installation. But I kind of like the idea of a system I can just take in and out when I want. I ran power straight from a cigarette lighter plug, and ran the wires and hose right out the passenger side door to the engine compartment.

On a side note, I kind of like having the meth pump right behind the passenger seat, with all that extra hose coiled up, you can hear the pulsation when the pump is running, making it easy to verify operation. Plus I can look back there and see the fluid level fairly easily. Additionally, the tank really would be less of an inconvenience behind the seat, than taking up trunk room in my case.

Later as I finalize installation, I will probably use a two conductor wire for the power wire from the boost switch to the pump, and the power from the lighter circuit to the boost switch. So the only thing going through the firewall will be the one hose, and one 2 conductor wire. As I said, the ground for the boost solenoid is already on the fenderwell area. The ground for the pump was taken right off the lighter plug in my case. As it is right now, if I want to disable the system, I simply unplug the lighter plug. In the future as I hardwire the system in, I will probably use simple LED light to verify pump operation.

I went through an entire tank on the 19 qtr mile runs (left off at 130mph), and a few highway pulls. I'm thinking I need to raise the activation pressure. It seems the meth is coming on when the BMS gauge is only reading about 6psi or so.

But in summary, the car runs like it is on 100 octane with just 91 octane. And no matter what, this will represent a huge savings on high octane fuel. But most importantly, it is there on demand. I used to think how nice it would be to have a second tank of race fuel that you could just switch over to when someone wants to race you. In effect, this does the same thing in a fairly simple/compact solution. And at only around 18Lbs running weight, it beats having a seperate race fuel tank cell anyways. Lastly, this is probably the cheapest, legitimate 25-30HP you can get for your car.

I was testing early morning. I think the difference may be even more impressive in warmer weather where our cars really lose horsepower.

That would probably take some MS109 perhaps.
Still 118mph traps with stock intercooler, downpipes, exhaust, airbox, etc, etc is not bad. It would put you up there with some pretty impressive cars, even in daily driver configuration.

so meth only gave you .2seconds and 4miles per hour after uping the map to map 10? isnt that not significant? i could be wrong but i was expecting to see a bigger increase from no meth to meth (numbers are great dont get me wrong but the difference is what im commenting on). is that something you can even feel?

He can consistently repeat those numbers on back to back runs without heatsoak...So yeah thats really important....

What mixture of meth/water did you go with?

It's also important to note that hotrod is still running stock DPs, exhaust and intake. There's only so much power you can get out of the N54 with these stock parts before you hit that point of diminishing marginal return of performance gains... and I think hotrod is really close to that point.

I would suspect that his gains with meth would have been significantly better if he wasn't all stock.

so are you saying that meth is something you wont feel on a hard pull its only for maintence so you can keep going? i thought like once the meth kicks in you feel a significant pull right?

Yes but realize the peak boost recall was only .5-.9psi higher on map #10 than map #7. Perhaps it has to do with all these runs, switching maps, etc, without adaptation. And additionally right now I am running stock board with no custom resistors, etc.

Either way, the beauty of this is how well it runs on map#7! Its kind of refreshing to know I can get this much performance on the same map that I daily drive on with 91 octane. And not having to use a race map has safety benefits too.

Also, the meth does help they top end most noticeably. Remember, up to 40mph or so, I am just taking it easy on the throttle, with all of these soft 2nd gear launches. With traction, you would then feel the meth benefit in the lower gears too.

Oh you feel it alright when it kicks in for sure...There is a significant difference for my car when I have the meth on and off...
Remember Hotrod is stock except for his tune, and if he had an intake and DPs he would be seeing even a greater return in performance with METH!

Yeah on my setup....I see IATs drop to about 82-81 degrees but not much more than that and my setup of the nozzle is similar to yours..! FBIS showed his IATs drop to I think 72 degrees in one of his video..I am wondering if its the location of the nozzles....He has his before the sensor...Shiv stated that its more beneficial after the sensor, but I am wondering why STETT has their bungs before? Thanks HotRod for your testing. Looks like meth will be in my future next year.
