Winter tires for PNW?

How are the stock 17" Continentals for the winter up here, considering I will be driving up to the mountains to snowboard. Are they good enough or is it worth it to spend the money on some winter tires. Considering I have a 328Xi.

If so, any suggestions?? Not really looking to spend a lot of $$.

How often do you drive when it's snowing? I did fine with my all season RFT's last year in light snow. When it got really bad I just took the bus.

I go almost every weekend but my car I will take maybe twice a month. I don't want to take the bus, or depend on other people thats why I got the Xi.

all seasons should be plenty good with your XI... no need to spend money on a complete winter set up... hell for your xi summer tires will probably get you by

Depends on how "safe" you want to be. All seasons with an xi, probably fine. I just put 17" Continental winters on my 330i and I don't drive up the mountain. The new studless winters are also better in any temps under 45 degrees, not just snow. Plus, I look at it as I'm saving my 19" wheels from getting beat during winter.

I have 19" Blizzak LM25 winter tires on my M3. They worked well when I was in Boston. I just put them back on last week.

just get a set of all season or winter rubber, or rock the stock tires, you should be fine

Thanks for the advise. I think i'll keep the stock one for now and see how it goes. I want to save that money to get some summer wheels.

Depends on where you go. I run Winter tires on another set of wheels from Tirerack. I drive around hilly areas and I have a 328i. I am running Dunlop Graspics. Not the best, in hindsight, would have preferred the Dunlop WS2 or 3s.

IIRC, last year was pretty bad; couldn't get anywhere with the 325i, not even up our own driveway!

This year we're expecting El Nino so snow shouldn't be as big of a problem. Ice? Will winter tires even help with ice?

I have some Conti WinterContact TS810's that I would not go up to Hood without. Of course, my other option would be 18" RFT's on a RWD car...

Seriously, I love them. My brother used to worry when we took my car since his was FWD (Accord). He thought we were going to get stuck because my car is RWD and too much power etc etc. He shut up the day he got stuck and I kept going without slipping a wheel. If you're going up to the mountain regularly, put some snows on. Then get some 19's for your summer setup!

And remember; it isn't about the going, it's about the stopping. AWD doesn't have any advantage in that arena, it's a tire game at that point.
