BHP Question

Just wondering about this (Saloon):

318D - 1995cc - BHP 143
320D - 1995cc - BHP 177

So BMW have limited the 1.8D. What would happen if the 1.8D would be remapped, what BHP would it have? Same question for the 2.0D, what BHP would it have?

Theyre both same size engines so surely the 1.8D should be able to meet the maximum BHP for the 2.0D? If not, why not?

Thanks

The 318 and 320 although the same block have different injectors I believe so it wouldn't be as simple as chipping to match performance.

Have look here for BHP increases for both as a guide:

Yeah, I think this is a common misconception. That that same engines are actually only different in regards to the software.

It's the same story in the VAG world, they have quite a few different power outputs from their engines, such as the 2.0T in the golf gti, cupra, s3 etc......

Also the camshafts are different between the 318 and 320. The only car I know of where the changes between the "1.8t" and the "2.0t" was purely software (both 2.0 turbo engines) is the Saab 9-3.

Is this the same between all BMW series or just the 3?

This has been covered before - a quick search and you'll find this thread -

http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=295039

And within that thread, you find specifically this bit -

Quote:
The main engine and mechanical differences between the 320d and 318d are basically as follows:

Larger, uprated turbo charger in 320d
Larger, more efficient intercooler on 320d
ECU mapping
Uprated fuel injectors on 320d
Uprated manual gearbox on 320d, with higher torque capacity and longer ratios
312x24mm front brake discs on 320d (as opposed to 300x24mm on 318d)

I have a 118d and my wife has a 120d

The 120d is considerably more muscular, the 118d feels restricted by comparison - still a good engine though.

My 118d has now been remapped to 183bhp - it is a slight fraction quicker than the 120d now, however the 120d still feels more muscular, but the remapped 118d is much more free-revving and "zippy"
