Is there any way to pull codes without using 3rd party tools? [Engine Malfunction]

Hello All,
I've searched the Forum and it seems like everyone uses the BT Tool to pull codes from their cars.

I was wondering if our cars had a way to check codes like other cars do (I used to do this on my Subaru SVX by bridging a connector and counting how many times the check engine light flashed - like this).

I am not opposed to buying a BT tool, but I have not had the need for it yet (I am bone stock) and I haven't researched the available 3rd party offers for code reading/clearing. I was just hoping there was a quick way to do this tonight by myself so I could determine whether or not I really MUST take her to the dealer (I don't want her to be messed with if I can avoid it).

For the record: bone stock E92 as in signature, ~5600k miles. Engine stuttered while driving back home yesterday night, I was at normal traffic speed. Received "Engine Malfunction, reduced power, safe to drive" messages and managed to drive her home (~7 miles). The car would keep shutting off at lights if I let go of the gas pedal.

Thank you in advance,

-Walter

PS= sorry for any redundancy, I have limited time before I return to work and couldn't find tangible answers after searching and reading a bunch of threads for several minutes.

There is no other way.

Try to find an independent repair shop and have them run a scan. Might cost you some money though

Thanks Dave. Can it be a generic OBD-II tool?

Thank you,

-Walter

Generic OBDII will read some codes, but not all.

Best bet is to head to a shop with a GT1 scanner.

As mentioned, I haven't had the time to do much research about this (will do soon). But according to your suspicion, is it safe to assume the HPFP issue wasn't addressed on 2009 models? Mine was built in April/May and I picked her up in June. :'o(

Is there a revised Fuel Pump they are installing, or they install the same exact one hoping it won't fail again?

+1 or get a 3rd party scanner like a Peake Tool or BT Scan Tool. The Peake tool has the ability to read and decipher the BMW specific codes which are different from the Generic OBDII codes.

your symptom is very clasical example of hpfp failure. people still have issue with hpfp on 2009 or even 2010 models. AFAIK, bmw recently released new hpfp that supposedly fixes previous hpfp issues but this is their 3rd revision or something and only time will tell whether the newly released hpfp will be the one that actually fixes this issue or not.

So the Peake tool does work? Can you also delete codes with it?

I'm in need of a code reader but really dont want to spend $300 on a BT because I'm not interested in the rest of its capabilities.

The BT is the reasonable interface to rear all codes. Or find someone local to you to read them for you with their BT interface.

if you're bone stock what's the big deal? take it to the dealer. you can't go around wondering whether you're going to be stranded on the side of the road. Ask for a loaner. sheesh. where's the fruitcake lady when you need her.

Hehe... I noticed you were local from your first post, but didn't catch the drift at first. PM forthcoming Sir.

I hear you and acknowledge that is the logical solution. But I would prefer for my car to be 'funked with' the least possible. I've read horror stories on here where people took the car to the dealer and had all sorts of stuff replaced without need.

Apparently it happens. All I did was searching for titles containing "engine malfunction" and spent 15-20 minutes reading. You'll see.

I would. I like the idea of my car to be left alone unless something is absolutely needed. I don't want wastegates, solenoids, spark plugs and/or fuel pump to be replaced with the risk of having the issue come back (improper diagnosis).

Peake works for cars up to 2007 so it would work for your model. It also resets SES or CELs.

Thanks Nick. But my E92 is 2009, so it wouldn't work.
