Oil Temps on 335i automatics
Just wondering what other peoples average oil temps on the 335 autos are?
My car is 10 days old and the needle usually floats somewhere between 1/3 to 1/2 of the way between 210 and 300 on the gauge. |

what is the relationship between automatic trannies and oil temps? I think you're talking about transmission oil temps...even so, we don't have a gauge for that. people who are concerned about tranny oil temps are people that tow trailers, boats etc.

basicly every other car or truck I've ever owned the oil temp gauge has always been pined right in the middle of the dial, which happens to be 210 on the 335... However, it just caught my eye because its always 1/3 of the way to half of the way between 210 and 300, so, I'm wondering if thats normal. |

Same (and I got Auto). 1/3 of the way past the half mark (210) when I'm taking it easy, no more than 1/2 the way past the half mark when I'm having fun

Totally disagree...they definitely need it there...and they also need a bigger oil cooler. I have been on track with my Audi S4s...before..in 100 F weather..it is definitely something to watch...and be understandably concerned about.

Actually the transmission seems to have something to do with it since US/Canadian spec AT cars do not have the engine oil cooler, whereas MT cars do. My car hovers around 120C, which is ~250F.
For more info on the oil coolers, see here: http://e90post.com/forums/showthread...ght=oil+cooler |

Mine finds a spot somewhere between 190 and 230F on the temp gauge. I dont think Iv gone over 230-240. We're averaging temps between 50 and 75F over here in Central Florida..
I officially hit 1,000 miles tonight, and I had some fun. Finally hit around 6,500 rpm unintentionally of course lol Driving great for the most part. Really puts a smile on my face when I realize what I can do. The passing capabilites are amazing. I have a hard time deciding between dropping gears or taking it through the full range of the throttle if I'm around 3000 rpm. The sad bit is that I havent found anyone to race yet I think it's about time. Anyways, Would better oil filters and oil coolers help in overall smooth flow of the engine? what about a larger intercooler or cold air intake? A BOV for that matter? All things to increase the cold air-flow into the engine and maintain optimal temperatures... At what temperature, when the engine is warming up, do you guys think that the turbos and exhaust become fully functional? I feel like after the car gets to about 180F+ the engine starts to come alive, seeming to go from a naturally aspirated ~230hp/210tq engine into a ~300hp/tq sleeping giant The power/throttle response as well as the engine and exhaust note/sound seem to change. It goes from a hum to a growl. Daily driver to "roll out da way *****" I can't wait to get into the ECU and change exhaust, engine and suspension parts. I'm dreaming about it. When I wake up I realize I need $$$

230-240... i was hot lapping it once for about 10 minutes... (flooring it over and over and over) and I got up to 250, but thats the highest ever... The manual reads thats anything under 300 is normal
From what I have read, the 335i engine lowers boost until the car is warmed up to a certian point... for me, the also seems to be about the 180F mark where the car comes alive... |

220 to 240 depending on type of driving. As high as 275 while pushing it in 'M' mode.

It is a good question that has already been discussed a lot, and as mentioned above, Autos may actually run slightly hotter than 6MT since they dont have that small oil cooler in the brake airduct. I think all the 6AT's run about the same temp that is around 240 when fully warmed up and up to 250-265ish when driven hard. It doesn't really seem to be influenced much by outside temp so far since I have driven it in the 30's up to the 80's and it has still run the same temp.

Keep in mind that for those seeing 250 degree temps, at the very least you should be doubling your oil change intervals. Oil oxidizes significantly more at these temps. For every 15 to 18 degrees above 212degrees, the oil life will effectively half itself. Some may want to look into added oil cooling or at the least more frequent oil changes if running the car hard.
cheers! mike
