What does VANOS have to do with anything?

LL04 generally oils have lower detergency than LL01. Low/Mid SAPS is emissions related (used only for BMW Diesel in the U.S. because the lower detergency can not provide sufficient protection against the higher acid concentration resulting from the use of ethanol laced gasoline).

It has nothing to do with VANOS.

your confused. BMW LL98, was the standard for long life engine oils in BMW engines made on or before 2001. After 2001 BMW revised its standards to include engines with is new double vanos system. In 2004, BMW revised its standards to include engine oils with low SAP's to be kinder to its diesel emissions systems. This is the only area in which this standard differs from the one set in 2001. It also includes BMW's double vanos engines. Nothing in BMW LL literature leads us to believe that these oils will have a long life in Turbocharged, or M series engines. As for your jab on LL04 oils in gasoline engines, you can do a search, as this topic has been covered extensively on this forum. My current experiment with LL04 oil in my petrol engine has been outstanding! thanks to the high ZDDP in the oil, degredation has been the least of all the oils, I have ever tried.
