Tuning box problems - Please help
Hello all,
I was just wondering if any of you have ever had any problems with diesel tuning boxes?? I have a 2007 320d (177 bhp) and I fitted a "Spider tuning box" ( http://www.dieseltuning.co.uk ) and all was good until i got the engine management light on the dash. I then removed the box and booked it into my local BMW garage, they then inspected the car and reported back there was an issue / faulty part with the turbo so as the car is still under warranty they cracked on and got it all fixed up with the new parts installed and also had the car reprogramed??!!. Job done and no warning light! I then left the car standard for several weeks and there was no more problems, so I then reinstalled my tuning box and i must say it felt even more responsive then before. I then decided that this box was not for me as I was so worried that further problems will occur. I then completely removed the box for good. After a few days of driving without the box the engine management light lit up again!! I have took my car back to BMW yesterday and they say this time there is a problem with a wiring loom which will also be replaced under warranty which has been completed today, so my car is now back to standard with no warning light! So thats all good news but I really want the tuning box back on because I miss the power increase so much!! aaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhh, what do I do now?????????!!!!!!!! Do I risk it and put it back on, or is there any other options anyone recommends that they have had NO problems doing??? Any help will be much appreciated. Also they had the new face lift 320d which has more bhp but the same engine, i.e BMW have retuned / remapped the 320, could this be done on my older model??? |

You could have an Evolve Switch
You can apply/remove the remap and go back to standard within 5 mins, best of both worlds then I had mine last week, best thing I've bought in months - you'll even get a forum discount. I'd say you've been very very unlucky with your car, the Spider Box will not have had any bearing on the failure[s] you've experienced.

If its a 2007 than evolve switch would work unlike for some of us with 2009 cars - doh
If you had problems with spider box I cant see how it damaged your wiring unless something happened during install/removal of it. I would speak with spider in mean time get in touch with evolve, being in a older car your ECU is not locked and open to ODBC and switch programming

I have tried and tried to get in touch with "Spider" and they don't seem to play ball. Oh well only so much I can do there!!
Think I will look into the evolve switch though, sounds like a plan. Even though my car has been in the BMW work shop would they not of updated my ECU i.e locked it?? Or is this something that they would not of done?? Regarding the wiring I think it was something to do with the common rail wiring loom or whatever its called, as this looks like its been replaced & I'm sure this is what was said?? But I'm far from clued up with this side of things!! Really want to get something done, I've had the extra power and now want it back!! Makes a nice little difference!! Quote:

But it seems strange that a piggyback box can create so many problem with the car. I had use similar piggyback box in the past and never had any problems.
Good thing that they replace everything under warranty thou without mentioning anything about the tuning box

oops seems another one up on Andrew from DTUK then, makes me glad I did not get a spider.
Very odd for a tunning box to do damage as such unless faulty. As for your ECU from March 2009 on the E90 LCI BMW introduced new ECUs which are now more secure making oDBC coding very difficult and right now only way to remap such cars is ECU out of the car. As your car is older it will have the older ECU so evolve switch should work and you will be able to switch between a tunning map and stock at touch of a button
