Oil sensor broken again...!!

My e90 325xi is going back in for service again :mad:


1. had oil sensor problem
2. replace steering column assy
3. replace left front strut
4. missing pages on the owner's manual....


and oil sensor broke again.
going back in forservice tomorrow morning.

after add 1 more qrt of oil it still asks to add more oil...


dose anyone have same problem?

dude, not to be mean. but it sounds like your car fell off the ship while they were loading it and then gave it to ya. I havent heard of these problems before

Just 3 days ago, a warning came on while I was driving that said my oil level was low and to add 1 quart of oil. When I checked the oil level in the OBC using the turn signal stalk and in iDrive, it showed that my oil level was at "Min". Since I was just a couple of miles away from a dealership, I headed that way to have them take a look at it and add oil if necessary. A mile later, the warning went away and both indicators showed that my oil level was back up to "Max". I periodically checked it for the next 40 miles or so and it didn't change.

Is this similar to what is happening for you? BTW, mine is a 2006 325xiT build date 12/05.

I had my oil sensor come up last friday at only 2500 miles on my E90 328xi and called service on saturday. They told me not to worry as this was just a problem with the oil sensor which needs to be replaced.

The problem is that the oil sensors are on backorder . They just took my name and said they will call when the sensors arrive and not to add the 1qt of oil.

Uh oh. Is this the start of my BMW electronics woes?

The sensor is not the issue. there is a build up of moisture in the crankcase system that causes the lvl sensor to give you a false reading. the cause for this is a lack of driving. the fix at this time is to get the oil super hot, replace the filter and oil.leave your oil cap off for a long period of time say 15 mins, to let the system vent. remove the sensor and blow it out. there is currently no permanent fix. it is reccomend that you drive several times a week at a sastane highway speeds.

I have the oil sensor problem for two weeks now and was told they will change it when the backordered part arrives.

I did a follow up call today and the Service Advisor tells me to bring it in as this has a TSB. He said that this problem was caused by moisture and will take a full day to fix as they have to evaluate the car. And continued to say that they have the parts in stock in case they have to change the oil sensor.

Anyway I found this at Bimmerfest.

The #1 solution is to have a "Joyride" at our expense if they opt for step #7. And #2 is what we are hoping they will do.

When speaking to a customer with this condition it is important to note the condition is the result of minor condensation, it is minor and does correct itself when driven for awhile. There is an updated repair procedure below, however it is more important to understand why this is happening and that it will correct itself once the extreme temperature and break-in period have elapsed.

Replacing the sensors is not the Fix, Either the procedure below or TIME will correct the condition on the affected vehicles.

Subject: "Low oil level" warning on NG6 engines w/AWD
Importance: High

Hello,

Just FYI.

The suspected cause of an erroneous ‘low oil level’ warning is crankcase condensation which has migrated into the oil condition sensor affecting the oil level calculation.

This problem occurs most frequently on the AWD vehicles (N51, N52, N52K engines) due oil pan design with sensor placement - occurring primarily in regions with very cold temperatures.

New or low mileage vehicles appear to be very prone to this situation - perhaps due to condensation buildup during the high number of engine starts (but not usually reaching full engine operating temperature) during the vehicle transport process after production.

* In many cases the problem goes away on its own if the vehicle is operated long enough to purge this water vapor from the engine! – see step #7 below.

Note: Troubleshoot all oil sensor or BSD line related faults and verify proper sensor operation.

In the event of a customer complaint the repair procedure has been changed.

1. Complaint that the ‘low oil level’ warning came on, but has gone off and not reappeared – only perform step #6 or #7 of the procedure below - verify correct oil level check operation and release vehicle.

2. Complaint that the ‘low oil level’ warning is on or goes on and off at times – verify and follow the procedure below.


* Note: Follow instructions in TIS repair instruction RA 12 61 285

Wear protective goggles

Wear oil-resistant protective gloves

Observe country-specific safety regulations

Procedure:

1. Begin with engine at operating temperature - drain and measure oil including filter to verify fill quantity – inspect oil cap for signs of moisture and clean if necessary.

2. Remove the oil sensor – hold sensor upside down and gently blow out sensor through the oil fill opening on the bottom of the sensor tube using only compressed air – no shop chemicals!

3. Reinstall the original sensor with new o-ring P\N 12 61 1 744 292 – torque 8.5Nm.

4. Replace oil filter and oil - only 6.5L or 6.9qts of BMW HP Synthetic oil – RA 00 00 610

5. Test drive until engine is at full operating temperature and verify that oil level status shows correct at “MAX”

6. In a well ventilated area, operate the engine @3500-4000 rpm for 8 minutes to raise the engine oil temperature to a point as to vaporize any remaining moisture within the valve cover and crankcase. Let engine idle for 2 minutes before shutting off. With the engine off, remove the oil cap to allow any hot vapor to escape for a few minutes.

7. An alternative to #6 would be a longer test drive of at least 30-45 minutes of constant engine and higher road speeds to purge any remaining moisture.

This information will be covered in this month’s SRT.

Just had my sensor replaced today at the dealer actually. Dropped off at 8:00, got a call saying my car was ready at 10:00.

The sensor said I need 1L a month ago when the car had less than 5000km, dealer added 1L and everything was fine and dandy for a week, then the low level light came on and off every weekend (imagine that!) and it started staying on the 3 days before the service appointment. Of course it went off when I brought it in...
