335i rattle (wastegate ??!)

Hi guys I'm new to the forum but not new to BMWs ever since being converted since buying an e46 330d sport about 2 years ago. I now drive a 2007 56 plate 335i coupe which is amazing... I bought it as a BMW Approved car with 12k on the clock... It's now got around 13k on it and has developed a rough idle and an annoying rattle once cooled to 80-90c, this goes away when warm. Have read about the seemingly infamous (in America anyway) wastegate rattle and how BMW prefer to upgrade ECU software first. The car is currently with BMW at the moment having this done....

Question - is this common over here too ?? And is the software upgrade likely to solve it without added percieved lag which is documented?? I eventually want to get a remap but am keen to make sure nothing is going to go wrong with turbos etc before I do this...

Cheers, Jeff*

Hi Jeff,

The thread below explains the whole saga to date, yours being an older model it is more relevant to the issue.

http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=178314

Remember to ask the dealers:

What software version your car had in it and what version they have upgraded it to, This is very important for you future reference!!

No one else can tell you but them and if you forget to ask when you pick up the car they won't tell you afterwards!!!

right car has been into BMW and they did indeed diagnose the worn wastegate problem.

I have sifted through all of the paperwork that i took away and it appears that the new version of the software (ISTA/P ??) is 34.1.0.0 does this sound right ?

Anyway it doesn't appear to have really solved the rattling problem (it came back after 60 miles of spirited driving) and its introduced an awful lag which has ruined the driving experience completely (its also stopped the mirror moving when put into reverse which is annoying !)

I guess the best thing is to go back to BMW and request the wastegates are changed ? however will they be able to revert the software back to give me back the instant response that made me want the car in the first place !!

They won't reverse software upgrades.

You're stuck now! Mines had the lag from new and I'm on V33.0,

Apparently according to E92fan on this forum, V34.2 onwards contains the old (i.e. no lag) wastegate control functions.

V35 is out soon anyway...

Apparently mine had a noise coming from the turbos but this was down to the actuator which is apparently an issue with some 335i's.

This occured after a software upgrade but now resolved under warranty.

So they diagnosed the worn wastegate problem, but only updated the software to try and cure it?

In that case, they've followed the TSB/PUMA to the letter. It states that in the first instance the ECU must be updated to the latest integration/software level. If the noise persists thereafter, then the wastegate(s) in question are to be replaced in their entirety.

I can only assume they haven't done this bit yet. It's no surprise your car is continuing to rattle !!

Basically all they have done is update the software as you say. I have a copy of the puma and they've followed stage 1 only with stage 2 being the replacement of wastegates and stage 3 being replacing turbos.

Do you know if changing wastegates and then reprogramming the ecu (I've read somewhere of returning to previous wastegate values albeit with the latest software ie no lag)

anyway it's booked back in to BMW on Thursday so lets hope it's sorted...

The wastegates definitely need replacing, and in the course of doing that the software will be updated to whatever the latest version is. Assuming the wastegates are fixed properly, the difference will be night and day - you should feel as though you have a totally new car

Good, just be glad to get it sorted... It was always the plan to get it tuned with fmic and remap when I bought it so want to get it running 100% under the warranty first.

Mind you god knows how fast it'll be with nearly 400bhp as in standard form it left my mate in his cayman s thinking he should of bought a 911!!

Once tuned, it'll leave 911 owners wishing they'd bought a 911 Turbo

One word of advice - if you're going for a 390bhp-ish tune, with FMIC, then you should also think about upgrading the oil cooler, otherwise you'll end up running close to the oil temperature cutoff limit (147 degrees C) if you are driving your car like it's meant to be driven.

And you should also think about changing the engine oil from the 5W-30 BMW standard to something like a 10W-40 or better for the extra durability at high engine temperatures. I'm currently using Castrol TWS 10W-60, but have also had great results with the Mobil 1 Motorsport 15W-50

Cheers some good advice there, any specific oil coolers that are worth a look ?

There are three - one is from VK Motorwerks (which I use), one is from AR Design, and lastly the third is from Dinan.

The VK Motorwerks cooler replaces the OEM BMW cooler and mounts in the standard location in the right hand front wheel arch using the original brackets. It's worked very well for me and has been tested to death.

The AR Design is a supplemental oil cooler that mounts in the left hand front wheel well - requires more work to fit as it's a custom implementation, but does much the same thing as the VK Motorwerks.

The Dinan is much like the VK Motorwerks cooler, but more expensive.

Both can be bought via Kevin @ Birds UK as they are the official importers of all three

I bought an approved used 56 335i coupe from Derby BMW. I started the car for the test drive (engine cold) and straight away there was the wastegate rattle constantly going on.....very annoying! I said to the salesman who said it was fine.....I then laughed and then told him about everything I had researched on this forum, he then spoke to the Techs in the workshop and came out and said I was correct and a PUMA etc would have to be carried out.

I was hacked off because I had travelled 450 miles and paid for a hotel to view the car with the intent of buying but at least they were going to do something about it.

Anyway I bought the car, got some freebies and was told I would have the car delivered to me.

I recieved a phone call from the garage to say they had done a software update and changed the wastegates. I recieved the car about one week later I started the car and drove for a bit with no rattle...happy days! That was a week ago but now when the engine is cold and I drive off in first and change to second as it is changing there is a quick rasp/rattle for about 1 second It may do it more than this but i have not noticed. Once the car is a little warmer it makes no rattle all through the revs/gears.

My question is should I now take my car to my local BMW dealer (Aberdeen) I mean do these cars suffer from a little rattle every so often or is it possible to have them run perfectly? Its not annoying me too much as its only doing it a little when cold

The 335 engine is always a bit 'rattly' when cold - it's entirely normal. Only get worried when it rattles like a bitch when it's warm!!

Thanks for the replies guys.

I will wait and see if the rattle comes back when the engine is warm. In the meantime I will try and wipe that grin off my face
