Navi Questions - POI's & New Destination Entry
Pretty much of a navi noob here. After playing around with the navi, reading the manual & searching these boards, I still haven't been able to figure out how to bring up "points of interest" or use them with navi.
Also, is there any way to enter a "new destination" by resturant or POI name, i.e., I want to enter "Catilina Grill". I know you can use "Information" but that involves scrolling through a bunch of names & selecting the right category, too. Seems logical that you could just enter the name, but I haven't been able to figure out how to do it. Finally, what does the "i" in the narrow, left hand column do? Enabling & disablling seems to achieve nothing. The navigation section in the manual is a little thin. Is there a more complete manual for iDrive/Navigation elsewhere or on-line? Thanks. |

I just got my car a week or so ago, but this is what I found regarding your questions: 1) to get POI, you need to do a new destination then select information then select whatever you want. For example, gas stations. Then go back to the map view and enable the "i" on the left side. wait a few seconds and icons of gas stations will show up on the map. As for the "i", it brings up the last POI you selected. If you haven't searched for a POI, then the "i" does nothing. Hope that helps

Sorry, I haven't found or heard of anything that lets you enter the POI by name. FrankoQs answer seems to cover the rest of your inquiry.

that missing search feature in 'information' is a real bummer. i'm stunned to see that this isn't available. c'mon, how hard could that be?!! BMW (or here i guess it's navteq?) would need to hire a few 'better' soft engineers...
in the meantime it's a real pain if you're in a pretty big city... happy scrolling...

It is not Navteq. As discussed here ad nauseum, Navteq provides only the map data. They also do this for Google, Garmin and other GPS manufacturers.
It is the implementation of iDrive that restricts the logical search feature.

Unfortunately I think that's it, you select the Info on Destination and choose the POI you want to display, and only that one will show on the map. It is a shame. |

automotive technology = handling, safety, overall driving performance When it comes to luxury electronics, they are a little lacking...Let's hope they hear us and provide POI name search with a PROGMAN update!

The problem with having multiple POIs displayed is that eventually you can get to a point where that's all you see and the map is hidden.
