It works well, Al Gore developed it a few years back.

Yes, buy a European model.

+eleventy. I've been to 145 in my STi and it was pretty wound out. I figured 155-160 is the maximum the gearing can take and at that point you're going to be fighting alot of air resistance. The EVO's pretty much the same power wise, aerodynamics wise and gearing wise so I doubt 172 is possible. You'd have to have a stiff tailwind going downhill to even touch 160.

Maybe his speedo was about 25mph off at those speeds? If he had aftermarket tires that's completely possible.

I've seen the polizei driving all kinds of fast cars. They don't have to chase you far. In Germany you WILL get caught so don't run.
Back on topic
With the sports package I drive 150 mph every weekend. I was in a traffic jam driving 65 mph and it was killing me to have to drive that slow.

Everytime I head back to the states for vacation or business and hit the streets, I can't believe how slow 65-85 mph feels like. The intent is not to rub it in or anything....just stating a fact...it actually kills you inside having to drive so slow.

Right now I primarily set cruise at 120 mph and it's a smooth ride. Hell, people are still passing me...probably ibd12nv was one of them! Head back to the states in a few month permanently. Need to set my limiter now and get used to crawling on the interstate....or get something "plowed" in a cell as someone put it. Not cool.

my stock evo tires are 235 45 17 which is about 25.3 inches tall. the ones on it right now are 245 45 17 which are about 25.7 inches tall. while beating up on an sti recently I was up to 157 "speedometer" mph so since I have taller tires I figure my speed was reading a little low but at 157 the speedo already is off. so I estimate I was doing 145 to 150 and I still had revs left but I don't think I had enough for 172. mine IS the 5spd model though not 6spd so it may be a stretch but I still don't think even a mildly modded evo will hit 172 on stock gearing/tires.

6-spd wouldn't make much of a difference. Doesn't add any taller gearing at the top, just gives more gears to play with in the middle bascially.

So it's official: BS on the "172" the OP's EVO went.

Unless he meant 172 KM/H which would make a whole lot more sense.

Lost Cosmonaut - +1 on that but.....172km/h wouldnt make sense since hes in New York City. If Kilometres was what he was talking about than thats roughly 107mph which is nothing to brag about.

The 335i sedan has been electronically limited to 130mph. I asked my dealer about it and they confirmed it with me.
