Break-In Period for Replacement Turbos?

Hey Guys,

Not sure if this has been asked before, I apologize if it has. I searched but wayyyy too many results came back.

My car is at BMW getting both turbo assemblies replaced under warranty for the wastegate rattle. My new-to-me car is an 07 so it didn't have the "improved design" turbos, as the tech referred to them. I'm pretty pumped that I am getting a pair of brand new turbos for free but am wondering what the break-in should be? This is my first turbo car so it's all new to me. Should I just go easy on the throttle for a little while ~1k miles? Or is spooling them up to max boost important for break-in?

Thanks for the insight.

When I got mine replaced for wastegate rattle, I took it easier on the car for the first 1K miles.

Made sure that engine oil was at full operating temperature (you should do that anyway), shifting at low rpms to minimize boost until then. If I had a short trip that normally wouldn't allow for the car to get fully warmed up, I'd drive it around so that it did.

I'd also let the car run for a minute or 2 before shutting it down (even though you don't need to).

Might be overkill but I figured why not.

It is just to floor the car when fully warmed up, the turbos will never be better than they are brand new.

the new units require no substantial break-in.

running through a few heat cycles (200+ oil temp) - briefly taking the car from cruise to WOT several times will get the bearing surfaces well lubed.

most turbos are not released from the manufacturer unless theyve been test spun.

I'm schedule to bring my car to the dealer for the same reason. I don't expect any issues.

When did they start replacing turbos again? I thought the last TSB said they replace the actuators (after the software nonsense).

Not sure, I think it's up to the dealer. The TSB I read said in bold letters "DO NOT REPLACE THE TURBOS"..... hence why I am pumped about getting new ones....

Right, that's the one I remember. I hope it's not just an SA (stupid a55 is what that usually stands for) making stuff up. I had an SA tell me I was getting a new transfer case once. My car is RWD, so it doesn't have one. Please post how it turns out if you have time.

I got new turbos a month or so ago. I was surprised too. There was apparently a lot of interaction between BMW and the dealership before authorizing. (testing, interogating DME, etc.)

correct... and of course anytime putting a new turbo in... before starting the car up you want to crank it a few times to get oil flowing through the turbo... that way your not starting the car and the turbo starts spinning with no oil.

after that..let it warm up and rip on it.

*Update* on my service. My SA confirmed that my waste gates were the source of the noise, and wanted to perform a DME software upgrade which is covered by BMW's recall for this problem. Having been brought up to speed from this forum from those had this done then experienced turbo lag. He too had a customer complained of this, and I opted not to perform the upgrade.

I will see if the Vishnu's PROceed download from the website can cure this ailment first. I'll check back with you guys later with the findings.
