Driving Lights
I do a lot of night driving on backroads at higher speeds. I used to have a truck with off-road lights that were great. I was thinking about installing a set of auxillary driving lights hidden behind the kidney grills. Has anyone dones this? If so, how did it work out and what type of light did you use?

There is a guy in Sweeden who bought 2 Hella FF50 lamps and mounted them behind the kidney grill in his E90. Unfortunately the link to his site is not working. He had to cut an aluminium plate and mount the two lights on them and then finally mount the plate behind the kidney grill. He actually bought a slin HID ballast and converted the lights with H7 compatible HID lamps (instead of the original Halogen H7 in the FF50 lamp housing) It can be done.
Raj. Here is a translation from that site, Now I have my lights on the E92-! As I mentioned earlier in the thread, I bought 2 x Hella FF50 - small and sleek with high beam image, and H7 bulbs. I have supplemented it all with a Xenon HID conversion kit from Xenon King, a variant of 'super-slim' starter ballasts. The lamps, I have placed inside the 'kidney grills'. Crowded it was, but it did fit. The material inside which is semi-hard plastic - no firmly to attach to the words. I therefore cut to a pair of 3mm aluminum plates, approximately 80x80 mm, which I pop rivets in the lower, horizontal part of the plastic frame. The attachments to the FF50-bolted the lights I'm stuck with a central M8 bolt through the aluminum plate, which I had knit up a little bit in front of the plastic frame. Wires are placed between the kidney and the regular headlamp, with a team of space behind the plastic front that is well protected - Placed just in a 20A fuse on power supply. Wire size for the power supply to the relay, I took 4 mm2, the other connections was enough to 2.5 mm2. Earth points on both sides of the engine compartment, easily accessible. Power supply to the relay I took from the brown wire with yellow stripe (not to be confused with the yellow wire with brown stripe!) That goes into the right headlamp assembly - there is a large plug with lots of cables. It was too crowded to bust a current thief, so I stripped wire 5-6 mm in the middle of (without cutting it) and soldered where the cable to the relay control circuit. Shrink tubing on all connections, and attachment of all cables with buntand got round it all - looks 'almost' original out! Remote lights seen certainly by kidney grille, but it is a very discreet installation. And best of all - now is the main beam as well as it should have been from the beginning! FF50-headlights give a fairly wide beam pattern, which 'fills in' original beam so it will be quite acceptable. The lights are not that far, but it was not intended to do - do they want more lights in the distance is the so-called Pencilbeam headlights that apply, and some I have not found that fit innaför grill.
