BMW Performance Exhaust Installation
I have the opportunity to get the BMW PE for my 2009 M-Sport 335i coupe for dealers cost (approx $1,000). It will be installed at an independent BMW / Mini repair facility. Does a BMW dealer need to do the installation to be covered under warranty? Also, can the installation be completed without cutting or welding?
Thanks! |

from what i read around here, you have to install it at a BMW dealer to keep the warranty on it..
cost an arm and a leg to install it at BMW dealers |

The guys above are correct. It's a muffler what can go wrong? I had Mike's Muffler in El Monte install mine.
For the NA52 engine you need to cut the old one off. For your engine I am not sure.

That is what I thought. Not true if you have it installed at a non-BMW dealer.
You will not lose warranty on the car just not have warranty on the exhaust.

Are you sure? Im pretty sure if you buy a part from BMW, you can install it yourself and retain the warranty. Maybe not

I think this is right. I've asked Tischer and the local BMW dealership. According to them, BMW parts purchased from a BMW dealership come with their own 2 year warranty, regardless of who installs the part. If you have more than 2 years left on your warranty, then technically the warranty on the exhaust would run out before everything else, but you're probably not going to have any issues anyway...

BMW will not do warranty work on Performance parts not installed by BMW. This goes for any part but I mention Performance only because they generally do not come with the car from the factory and would be easy to identify. Regular OEM parts they would have no idea if they were replaced or not.
Personally I would not worry about and exhaust. Get it installed outside of BMW.

2 year warranty is correct. But BMW will not warranty the labor on the part if not installed by them. You would need to take it back to the person you purchased it from and then bring the defective part to BMW with your receipt for the warranty replacement.
Once you get the replacement part you would then need to go back to the independant and get it put back on. Quote:

spdy330 is correct. If you get the part installed outside of the dealer, they will warranty the part but not the work done. They can also argue that the defect is due to poor installation and refuse the warranty.

I was thinking about getting the PE myself. Does it have the same cats as the factory exhaust? If so, then what makes it flow better? Just better flowing mufflers?

the fact is that the P/E carries a 4/50km parts warranty if its installed at time of sale --- car is delivered with it installed.. if it is purchased over the counter, it carries the standard parts warranty of 2yrs/ unlimited miles for parts or workmanship defect. yes if the shop botches the install, dont expect BMW to step up to the failure on another techs labor. -- only thing that could go wrong is if the shop doesnt read the enclosed instructions and cuts the pipe at the wrong spot (there are indentations on the factory pipes) ... and it fits lousy, it the only thing that can really happen.. the rest of the installation is with cinch clamps and they are extremely strong... BMW uses them when replacing catalytic converters. so if the part fails, and the install is done correctly, parts warranty will cover the associated labor charges. -- just think if you installed it correctly -- and it failed -- they would still cover the labor to replace the part -- end of story ... |
