Golf tee mod already done?

I decided to give the golf tee a mod a try today. I opened the trunk, removed the flap behind the driver side brake light, unplugged the plug controlling the actuator, then started the car. Fumes came out of both exhaust pipes, but it sounded like it always did to me. I reattached the plug with the car still running and fumes continued to come out of both exhaust pipes. I didn't get a chance to unplug the vacuum line from the actuator (it was getting dark) but I didn't feel a BB or anything unusual in there. The car had not been driven for the past few days, so it was a completely cold start.

Does it sound like the car already has the golf tee mod applied? What else should I check to verify? This is a 2007 335i bought as a CPO. If it makes a difference, both exhaust pipes have always had the same amount of black soot on them.

if the golf tee mod was already applied, when you look into your left (if your facing ur rear bumper) exhaust pipe while idle (power on), you will notice no flap covering the hole. If the golf tee mod has not been applied, then you will see a flap covering the hole

Do you mean that I'll be able to easily see that the entire driver side exhaust pipe will be closed off? Since I was able to visually confirm that plenty of exhaust gases were coming out of both pipes, wouldn't that mean that the driver side pipe is open?

If the golf tee mod have been applied the exhaust flap may have stuck and want close whatsoever. Try checking the vacuum line too.
