Idrive Good... GPS Deader than hell! 2 weeks after purchase.

Not that big of deal right? I was heading into the dealership to pick up some stuff anyway so I asked em' to have a look. Head tech went out, messed with it for about 10 minutes, and then I saw him step out and make the sign of the Cross... Obviously administering last rights.

GPS DOA, 230 miles on car.

Other than that, I couldn't be happier, I like Idrive, it's a great toy but the GPS from BMW is pretty freaking lame. Real time traffic is very nice, but NOTHING, NOTHING with the GPS is intuitive, it's comical trying to enter a destination, name your current location, etc... NOTHING is intuitive or simple pretty lame.

Why, if BMW will farm out their Audio, their Tires, etc. can they NOT farm out their GPS to someone who knows how to design a flexible, efficient, intuitive GPS?

Hell I have a Garmin Nuvi, Cost about $600 and will run circles around the OEM GPS in every way. Better Audio, Better display, Better Features, and IT'S FREAKING DEAD SIMPLE TO USE!!!!

Ah well, I love the Car, it's still an amazing package, Hell I even like Idrive. But man is the GPS a stinky pile of poo...

Ah well it's going in on the 17th to have the GPS tweaked and the Ipod integration installed. :rocks:

Thread hijack....

What is the high beam assist listed in your sig?

Back on topic. I'm an engineer too...and a gadget fanatic, but I still can't make up my feeble mind on iDrive. The voice interface is cool, but I'm just not too sure about the glare from the screen at night, and I'm afraid that I'd get tired of having to deal with iDrive to tune the stereo. I also keep cars until they're old enough for Hemming's Motor News, so I'm a little afraid of its long term reliability.

high beam assist apparently is "automatic beams" .. so no need to dip the beams on an empty dark road ... car does it for you ...

on the idrive ... going through a number of steps just to change the speed limit ... ain't human friendly ... I never liked the GUI on the I-Drive system ...

Imagine you had to go through ten button clicks on your cellphone to just get the contacts list ... thats what i mean with the i-drive ...

NO NO NO... "idrive" is pretty freaking cool! Seriously, it's fantastic toy and I am glad I have it. It's a cool toy, and for the most part works fantastic. Specifically it's the GPS and the way it functions that is just pretty crappy, poorly thought out. Much more difficult than it needs to be.

BUT

idrive rocks, like I said it's a great toy and is for the most part a lot of fun!

At first glance, and first effort idrive can be a little off putting. Once you figure out the basics though, and how idrive works, it's pretty damned nice.

GPS though... Pretty Certain the Germans Love being lost...

Correct, All done, Drama Free! Mortis is purring... OK Ticking away healthily. Sounds like a freaking pissed off sewing machine but all is well. Took about 45 minutes, and 6.5qts.

GPS still has me in a different city though, all locked up. Which screws the Trip computer up pretty good.

So then what gives? Did Siemans pull their GPS out of a cargo ship and slap it in the dash? You'd think it would be better.

OK Well Over the weekend and after a Bath the GPS is back to functioning as well as it ever did. Nice and accurate if not intuitive...

Go Figure. Once again a car fixes itself. This after I messed with it, a BMW tech messes with it, and I mess with it again. After a three day absence it's all back to normal and trying to act like nothing happened.
