My ghetto $8 Nav/Bluetooth/MP3/Video/Phone mount. Cleaner than Proclip!!
THIS IS ONE FOR ALL THE CHEAP-ASSES OUT THERE! COST ME $8 TO MAKE.
We all know that really good, clean solutions for a non-idrive & non-BMW assist car are slim to none. Also, the Logic7 optical shit is proprietary and so even a simple head unit is not a viable option without redoing the amp/audio (which I personally thinks sounds great). Plus redoing all that would easily be over $2,000! A smartphone can do almost everything a $2k head unit can, anyways, but I hadn't seen a clean enough affordable mount, yet. So I made my own setup: Can you see the mount? There's no permanent modification or any ugly suction cup mount, proclip, adhesive, vent mount, or other obvious piece of crap screaming "there's a nav inside, bust the window and steal it!" Device: You then use the bluetooth with a reciever like a Blackberry Gateway or another of your choice and your phone calls, voice guided navigation, and music come out wirelessly through your speakers! It's an all-in-one solution for people with logic7, but no premium package that want clean navi/bluetooth/mp3 It's a clean non-permanent install mount for a phone, WAY better looking than Proclip IMO. It leaves nothing obvious behind when you take your phone out. It is less than a proclip+mount ($60). I guess you can spend thousands for an integrated navi/mp3/bluetooth setup, but this is perfect for cheap asses like me! Last edited by dre_2ooo; 12-05-2010 at 07:55 PM.. |

Want to make your own? You'll need:
Phone cradle: included with my phone JB Weld: $5 Acrylic paint: $3 Scrap plastic: You can find something sitting around for free. A beer bottle cap: free SD card case: you probably have one sitting around for free. Total: $8 Metal tape: Optional ($10) NOTE: I TAKE NO RESPONSIBILITY IF YOU HURT YOURSELF, OTHERS, OR DAMAGE YOUR CAR OR OTHER PROPERTY BY MAKING OR USING A CUSTOM MOUNT. Step1: Scrap plastic Use plastic that's thin AND strong. I used: cut it 1-2 inches thick with about a 80-degree angle. you can use a torch to CAREFULLY mold the angle. You can use boiling water alternatively. You should have a piece looking like: (note I put a small piece of plastic in the crevice. This will keep your trim from getting scratched during mounting/dismounting the phone.) The flat half resting on the table will be going under your wood/alum trim, so make sure it's at least 2" long and thin, SMOOTH plastic so it wont hurt anything! Here it is installed. The arrow is pointing to the small plastic in the crevice: Step 2: The 'condom' Make a 'condom' for your plastic out of an old SD card case like this one: Cut it like this: Then also use an exacto knife to hollow out its innards. Carefully "weld" the seams shut like this: It'll fit like this: Step 3:Condom-Cap-Cradle Assembly A beer bottle cap is the PERFECT fit for a garmin cradle JB weld the cap the to the 'condom:' (note I wrapped the condom in metal tape as additional support and adhesion) Test fit the entire thing in your car. Just GENTLY slide the plastic under your trim so it's snug, then put the condom on. Then test fit the cradle on what is now the condom-cap assembly and rotate it to a level orientation. Scribe a line from the cap to the cradle then remove everything from your car. Line up your scribe marks and JB weld the cradle into the cap-condom assembly: Step 4: finishing touches Paint the condom-cap-cradle assembly black to match the cradle: Paint the plastic to match your car: Insert plastic under trim as described above, put phone in cradle, slide condom-cap-cradle assemble on plastic. DONE! I plan on hard wiring the cradle soon, just waiting on some parts. |

Interesting. I've been searching for a mount for my new Droid Pro, but nothing is proprietary like my original Droid. Need somewhere to keep the phone when I'm using Google maps instead of the iDrive for navigation lol.

man, you got a blowtorch and what looks like some meth leftovers in that sd card enclosure. i speak from experience when i say that these items are the perfect combinations for ANY diy project and your gps/phone mount sir is amazing. It looks cleaner than my $100 mount anyway.

Definitely get a DOWNVOTE for hacking up a classic NES system
J/k, it's your NES, you can do to it what you want to. Grats on the ingenuity, using a beer bottle cap, SD card holder and generic magnetic cellphone clip.
