Stock 335i vs Tune only 335i (w/video)
Is this a good estimate for the performance of a JB3 only vs stock 335i? I'm looking into a JB3/JB4 but not sure if it's worth the risk of warranty loss, long term reliability, initial cost, and regular swapping for dealer visits. Does a JB3 merely walk away from a stock 335i as seen in the video or does this look like a mediocre tune?

I think a jb3 will pull hard on a stock 335, I mean it is about 80whp. Once you try it, you'll never want to go back to stock, it'll feel slow at stock.

I think it's worth it. It turns the car into another animal! But, if you get it and your warranty is voided, it is what it is. I waited until my warranty was up, fwiw. That way I got a chance to see how reliable the car would be. I haven't had any change in reliability, and I have been tuned for over 30k miles.

And yes a tune makes a BIG difference, but only get one after you do lots of research about how they all work. Make sure you know which kind you want (piggyback, standback, flashtune, etc..) The range of customizability across these different options is incredible. If you just want to set it and forget it, i'd suggest a flashtune. If you like tinkering with stuff (at your own risk that is) you can get something more advanced.

I've been doing research for months now since I've had the car. I lurk a lot and use the search button but this is really the only video I've found of stock vs tune only. If you know of any others I'd love to see it. Videos gauging performance are worthless to me when both cars have mods. |

Also, it's always better to mod a car with low miles than a car with 50K+ miles. The engine is fresher and you have less likelihood of things like bad compression, carbon build up, etc. Other things too like in Cali, you don't have to smog a new car for like 3 or 4 yrs so you don't need to worry about replacing downpipes, etc. for several years whereas if you begin modding in year 4, you'll need to get your car smogged legally or illegally every 2 yrs. I'm being serious here. Just want to understand the rationale behind this "wait till the warranty expires before modding" mentality. In either case, mod before or after warranty expires, you pay if the mod blows your engine. So, what's the thought process for waiting? |

I have a few reasons for waiting and being reluctant to tune.
1) It's a daily driver and I don't want to risk reliability so I've been reading and researching a lot before purchasing. 2) I don't want to be bothered with having to remove it every time I stop by the dealer for routine service. If I tune after the warranty is gone, then it's none of their business what mods I have on the car. 3) I also don't want a blown engine -- at any mileage. I'm no stranger to engine builds or tuning, but I want this car to stay simple. I had a 2004 gto with cam, heads, headers, built tranny, etc, that I tuned myself with a wideband and hptuners. I later had another 2004 gto (one for each city I was living in at the time because I really enjoyed that car) that had similar mods + a D1SC procharger. Both are gone now. While the speed is fun, peace of mind and a warranty are pretty nice as well. I considered that 335i in the video to be "walking away" because compared to what a 560rwhp GTO would have done, it was "walking." That should add a little context. I bought this car to be sophisticated and docile, not to be voiding warranties and blowing up engines |

The chance of blowing an engine on a tune only n54 is almost like winning the lottery, actually less - I don't think it has happened yet! The few instances where engines did blow, it was cases where the user turned off all safeties to run more boost or had a failure/improper usage with meth. Have you ever seen the rods on an N54?, if you have, then you wouldn't be so worried.

"Impossible" is a very strong word. Try to look behind the marketing...

Thats about how it is, get a tune. They are so easy to install and once you have it you will realize what you were missing out on all along. The first night I installed my JB3 I got whip lash, no joke.
