I would be hesitant to put more money down on a lease than required. The point being if you pull out of the dealership and total your car, you will have totally lost your 5K.

How do you figure he would lose his $5K ?? Most he would be out is his deductible and would get another car at same financial deal.

What am I missing ??

hmmm... i think the range should be between 650 to 680. if it is over it for a lease might as well buy it.

5k down is a lot for a lease... just buy it... anyway, i would put less than half of 5k or just go to a different dealer.

The Owners choice might be a viable option for you.
Owners Choice
OwnersChoice combines the lower monthly payments of leasing and the security of ownership.
How it works?
You make low monthly payments for a set period. When you reach a three-way option point, you can either:
Get a new BMW and sell your BMW back to us at a predetermined price.
Refinance the balloon payment amount.
Complete your purchase by making the balloon payment.

Because the insurance company pays out to BMW who owns the car. Not the driver.

Putting any money down, other than what is required or MSD's, it not a wise move. You will not get that cash back should your car be totaled. One of the ideas behind leasing is to put as little money down while getting into a nice ride. I would venture to say that if you have to put down $5K to make an affordable payment, you shouldn't be getting a BMW.

Just checked with my insurance agent. If totaled they would make sure that I got another car at same $$ I was paying.

BTW my financial situation is not at question here so why add those comments ?? IFor the record, if I wanted to I could pay for yours, mine and a dozen others on my pension alone and still not impact my lifestyle or my kids future inheritance.

Anyway, I'm outa here for 3 weeks !
