The early E46 automatics were made by GM. Total and utter garbage! There is almost 100% failure rate on these, where the tranny will break in such a way that it will refuse to go into reverse.

120.000 km on my gearbox, 118.000 km with a tune.
1 Cannonball run, many miles on the German autobahn, many miles on the racing track... and just one gearbox related issue... my gearbox was sweating a bit of oil... and upon acceleration it gave a little bit of a puffing sound... My dealer took care of it, it seems something that some 5 series diesel gearboxes now and then have... Solution: New filter, oil replacement and refill and all was fine again.. last 20000km havent's had a issue... it was caused because of the low oil level, which gave the gearbox have it difficult when generating pressure, for example upon acceleration... So all together, a very strong gearbox... but lesson one: Warm your car up before you abuse it, I have always done that and it pays off, it seems...

Shiv's test 335 is an auto...that thing has been beat to death in testing and the track. I would assume it is safe.

srry was typing from my blackberry. basically the torque converter locks up to the gears when you go wide open throttle, so its the strength of the gears themselves which come in to question. im pretty sure you will snap your half shaft before you break the transmission
