Exclamation Calling all Manual Trans Drag Racers!

I just thought I'd let you know that there will be a point that the flywheel will need to either be resurfaced or replaced because I got to that point.
There are also only a handfull of shops that are willing to resurface the DMF as well. i found one machine shop that would do it for about 100 bucks but he couldn't guarantee anything.
Some will remember that i was at Famoso a couple months ago with an almost brand new stock clutch and it was slipping. I know that the clamping force on the stock clutch isn't that good but i was surprised that it was slipping as bad as it was.

I then put back my ACT, but I went to Irwindale with Terry and the ACT clutch slipped then as well.
The reason is my flywheel.

Luckily, I was able to buy FBI's stock flywheel for a really good price instead of forking over a grand for a brand new one, and there was no way that I was going with an aluminum flywheel that was going to chatter like crazy. I've been there; done that.

Here are some pictures between my old flywheel with 94k miles on it and the other flywheel with 10k miles on it.

did you hear strange noises like a rotating klunking noise especially on cold starts?

No but I was noticing "judder" more and more of the clutch disc skipping when taking off from a start.
It was skipping instead of slipping.

man, wish you went with a light weight one... i'm hoping for many reviews to help my decision on stock or aluminum in the future.

I've kinda felt this also. very subtle in first taking off with medium acceleration. I'm stock with just a tune. just felt it a couple times so far and there's no slip that i can feel, even WOT in 5th at highway speeds.

I felt this as well but mostly in second gear (wierd). It was after I got my stg 2 installed, i've had 3 times where the car slips and then goes like a batt out of hell. I don't beat on the car, don't drag race it, and generally drive pretty mello. Hopefully my clutch/flywheel isn't going.

If you have a problem with your clutch and don't beat on the car ever that just ends up being a bill with no joy..why?

BTW guys,
The entire process took me about 6 hours but I also had to fix a leak.
My trans was leaking and the seal needed to be redone and that took about 2 hours to do. I separated the trans, cleaned, sealed and let dry.
If I were to do just the clutch again, I bet that I can do it in about 3 hours.
This is just another one of those things where BMW will charge so much more time than what it really takes to do.

Did you put the ACT back on?

Been shopping around for a future clutch install, either clutch masters or ACT.
I value your opinion since you actually drive your car the hardest, what are your thoughts?

Just wondering if...

A) Clutch and/or flywheel is covered under 50K/4yr warranty?
B) Clutch and/or flywheel is covered under extended "CPO" 100K/6yr warranty?

I'm guessing NO...

The odds of getting a new clutch under warranty is around 50/50.
Flywheel? I highly doubt it.
They can easily say that it was abused.

Mr. 5, I'm also experiencing this skipping problem that you describe. I also have the ACT clutch, and I believe there must be a problem with my flywheel. It feels like it is possibly warped from too much heat. I only have 55k miles on the car though. I'm not sure if this can be corrected by a re-surface, but spending $1200 on a new flywheel is not very exciting. Can you give me info on which shop was willing to do the resurface? Were they able to do the install as well? I'm in the Los Angeles area.

If you or anyone else hears about a stock flywheel for sale, let me know, as I am definitely in the market.

How bad is the SM LW Flywheel on the RWD 335i's ? Ive done Hundreds on Nissans/infiniti's and there barely any chatter...

I know my new mod before the get upgraded turbos will have to be a LW flywheel and a new clutch.. i might jsut have to get my DMF resurfaced if its THAT bad.

It's not an automotive installation shop. It's a machine shop.
You'll have to drop off the flywheel and then pick it up when done.
It's called Engine Supply on Dyer.

It's pretty bad.
I've heard some videos as well and it's not pleasant
