Navigation Volume
Hey Every,
Had a question on Nav volume. Just traded in my 2008 335 coupe for a new 2011. On my old car when i had a destination entered when the voice directions came on my other audio (iphone/radio) would lower. Is this feature no longer available on the new idrive? I know that you can adjust the volume of the nav voice but this doesn't help when the music itself doesn't lower. Thoughts? |

I noticed that too. My '07 muted the stereo and my '11 does not.
Usually if I think I've missed a direction, I just ask it to repeat and while it's talking I raise the volume level a little more.

to change the navigation volume:
while it's giving direction or you select repeat direction... turn the radio volume knob to raise or lower the navigation volume found it in the manual... |

That's not the problem here. The old nav used to mute the music while it gave you your next instructions. The new one competes with the music so if your music is up loud, they end up trying to scream over each other to be heard.

That could be a bug, or it has to do with the relative volume change. Usually, you will hear a muting effect if the audio vol is much higher than the nav vol. You can balance the nav/audio volumes so that the muting effect is minimal.

I guess there's always something that isn't exactly how we'd like it. It's not something I can't deal with though, I just liked the old way better.

Looks OK on LCD, too. In my MY06 and MY09 iDrives, the relative volume effect was the feature. My audio never fully muted. It seems to me that iDrive always dropped the audio vol to a couple steps down from the saved nav vol. So if the nav vol was really low and your audio vol really high, the audio vol would get cranked down a lot when nav spoke (greatest muting effect). On the other hand, if the audio vol was a couple notches below the nav vol, then the audio vol would barely change when nav voice came on.
I am running 2.36.2 ISTA/P. It is possible that the current version (at least 2.40.2) changed how the nav reduced audio vol, or the MY2011 hardware does not support the muting (not sure why not).

I'm going out on a limb here and say that the nav lowers the volume of the "background" source to the volume of the preset when you first turn the car on. Lower that preset and your volume will turn down.

Glad I did a search, I was looking around trying to figure out how to adjust the navigation volume. Thanks for the knowledge.
