First time polishing with a PC
This weekend I plan to polish my wife's black Honda Pilot. It really needs it and I plan to clay then use Meguiars 205 with my PC followed by an IPA wipedown and then Collinite 845.
Was not planning a more abrasive polish before the 205. Do you think the 205 alone will leave a nice finish? |

to properly answer your questions we'd need to know a few things ..
what kind of PC are you using? How bad is the paint? Are you trying to remove deep swirls or light swirls? what color pad are you using?

Paint is not too bad. Some light swirls and some oxidation. Was going to use the Uber orange (medium polishing) pad or the Uber green polishing pad. Got them detailers domain. |

oxidation and swirls - a two step process to get 90% correction. If you are settling for 75%-ish, then 205 WILL brighten the finish, remove SOME defects, and remove the oxidation WITH an orange pad. a green pad might be a little bit of a stretch as its a polishing pad vs a cutting pad.
To be honest, I've never had 205 finish down well enough on a black car. You will more than likely have lots of micromarring as its a "non-dimishing" abrasive, which means the whole time you are working it, its cutting to a degree. Polishing with a product like menzerna or others with "diminishing abrasives" start off cutting, but then get refined into a non-abrasive state where all you are doing by working it longer is jeweling the paint (menzerna 85rd - very little cut if any, long working time, excellent final step) Just my two cents.... |

Never knew about the 205 not finishing down too well on a black car... definitely will take this into consideration when purchasing a set of polishes for my black car.

Might Menzerna Power finish 203s be a better choice for one step polishing? |

however, honda has pretty soft black paint, so something like menzerna 106 might be a better choice if you are set on just one step. 203 and then 85rd would be able to bring the finish to a cool 85-90 level and really amp the gloss though |

Tried 205 today on the hood only after claying and IPA wipe..... And you guys are 100% right..... 205 didn't get out the etched water marks. Raw weather today kept me from continuing but I definitely think I need 105 to start with.
The 205 with an orange pad had little impact. Live and learn. |
