At 260+ degrees, that 5W40 should have the same viscosity, and flow as the 5W30.

And thats why you haven't experienced any issues so far. Ambient temps make a HUGE difference. We are talking about life after 80 degrees, with humidity.

This thread is a joke. There is a real thread all about this with good discussion and comparisons in the track section. OP- no doubt you will have issues, esp with a AT and the Cobb. But if you are a newbie, you may not push the car too hard. Good Luck.

10W 60, which is NOT what you are getting at the stealership. You are getting Castrol TWS 10W 60, here in the states. NOT THE SAME THING. None of those oils on that site are sold in the US. Multiply the price in pounds by 2, then add shipping costs, taxes and tariffs, and you'll shit bricks when you realize the price. Go ahead and try and buy it from that site. Check your facts before you insult people on the internet.
You really have no idea what you are talking about!

First of all, Castrol USA DOES NOT sell any oil in 10W-60 grade. That stuff you get from BMW is the imported European Castrol oil. It is just rebranded here for the M engines.

Second, that pound to dollar conversion that you just attempted to do is a prime example of how ignorant most people are when it comes to costs and price conversions between Europe and USA. If you see a label of 5 British pounds is what an item sells for in Britain. You don't do direct price conversion using the currency exchange rates. That exact same bottle of oil will cost a lot less in some third world country, because this is what the market conditions are there.

Hey Jacka**, take a look at this link: http://www.velocitymotorcars.com/cas...motor-oil.html Thats castrol 10W 60 TWS. I'm pretty sure that this is what is in the stealership, wanna know why? Its it quarts, while the Castrol edge stuff is in liters. So which one of these two are they rebottling? I'm pretty sure its the stuff in quarts, made right here in the U.S.

I know U think that we Americans are stupid, and ZE german "LL01 scientists" have all the brains, However the only testing sequence that castrol carries is an API (American petroleum institute) rating of SJ!! SJ?? WOW Jesus!!, even the boutique oils have no problem clearing that test with at least an SM rating! You can't even find a synthetic at autozone, with a rating of less than SL! I would rather run piss in my engine than that archaic, 1980s formulation.

You honestly need to lay off the pipe or get more medication...

1. EVERYTHING in Europe is sold in liters! It is not to confuse the consumer between quarts and liters.

2. Do you honestly believe that Castrol bothers to ship European oil in small containers. Nope. They ship it in large barrels and then they repackage it here locally. But the 10W-60 oil itself comes from Europe.

3. Again: CastrolUSA DOES NOT sell 10W-60 oil in any shape and form. The BMW dealership sell you rebranded euro oil.

P.S.:
Why am I even bothering?! Congratulations, you are first to be added to my ignore list.

+1

The other thing is that this person may not be pushing very hard. I have found that although many 335 drivers I experience at the track think they're driving hard when they really aren't.

Being an instructor can mean one of 2 things here:
  1. They understand how to mange the car and that it must be managed. They give up the WOT track days and they are ok with it
  2. They just aren't pushing that hard cause they aren't as good as you would think. I have had plenty of instructors who aren't great drivers but teach well.

Bottom line is when you push our cars hard they get hot - more so with an AT
I bet it's #1
