Yes, it should be changed every 18,000 miles or 2 years, whichever is the sooner.

Tsssk...........On a serious note, what is the average life of a turbo on a D? I supose if you are the type of person who likes to drive cars with galactic mileage then getting a turbo refurb at say 100K might make better sense than waiting for it to blow and wreck the engine. All good in theory but I know that some have died at less than 50k which makes it a total lottery.

He was joking. Most turbo cars will never need them replacing.

It's a bit like a steering rack in the sense that it will likely never fail but the chances of failure grow with age.

If you stick to the service intervals and change the oil often enough, I do mine every 7k miles. It should last. I also let the car idle for a few minutes after a drive but I read this isn't really necessary on modern turbo diesel. Won't do any harm though.

If you search on here there seem to be quite a few that have expired at around 70 - 80k miles. But then I guess that problems on forums represent a very small percentage of cars sold... Mine is on 78k with no turbo issues (yet - touches wood!)
