Buying a '08 335i with 45k miles for $21k, only caveat is...

Ive made a deal with a private party seller to buy his 2008 335i automatic with sport package for $21000... Now the only thing, was that he disclosed that the the car before he purchased it was a lemon buy-back due to the hpfp being replaced 3 times (was originally a lease i believe when this happened). Now that is the only thing wrong with the car, i went to my local bmw dealership and presented one of the service writers with the vin so he was able to confirm the repair was done to the car as well as all the other scheduled maintenance. So while the title shows as "branded", it was only due to the buy back because of the hpfp. You guys believe this is still a great deal on the car? Car is in great shape inside and out... and id like to believe that its actually worth more than what im buying it for (because it does book out to close to $30k).
Thoughts?

Update:
okay... i just called my local bmw dealership and spoke to a salesman regarding this.
I stated that i owned this 2008 335i that was a dealer buy-back due to the hpfp, and that it has that branding on the title. I asked if that impacts resale value or if they would give me anything less as a trade-in value (hypothetically saying i might trade it in). He said "no, not at all because its not due to a reconstructed or rebuilt title" and that its an obvious difference. They can and still do warranty that car as a buy back so its worth its true value to them.

I think you can get pretty close to that with a non-branded title. Might be hard to get rid of if you don't like it, considering you are hesitant to buy it others will be too.

If they already fixed the fuel pump and the wastegate issue, you are fine. I say go for it!!! Also verify the injectors and spark plugs replacement as these things can get expensive.

not really hisitant... i guess i was just seeking opinions from people. i happen to think 21k is a good price on the car, i mean its not like the title was branded due to and accident or reconstruction. It was a buy back due to the hpfp, which we all know how many cars suffered those same problems. many people just got the pumps replaced and kept their cars, the original purchaser/leaser didnt want to deal with it anymore or found a way to get a new car out of it a couple years later, and took advantage of it. Of course the are thousands of cars that suffered the same fate with the fuel pump and after being replaced are running fine.

If you plan to keep the car for long time that is other wise, go for another car because the resale will be hard!

When i was at the dealership checking on the records, the service writer said there is a current open recall for the car to have the injectors replaced. So i know that i can bring the car in to bmw now and get that taken care of.

You won't, there's a reason why branded titles fetch such a lower price than clean title cars.

Not to sound harsh, but don't delusion yourself into thinking you are getting a good deal, lemon branded cars normally sell for much much less than they are worth regardless of the reason they were branded.

21k for a lemon branded car sounds to be par for the course, I've seen some across the country sell for as less as 15k~ or so.

As others have said, if you plan on keeping the car for a long time then it might be a good deal, if resale is anywhere in your plans for this car then I'm afraid you are going to have a hard time unloading it, much less actually getting more than what you paid.

I agree with you that there have been cars selling for less with a branded title... but their branded titles were due to reconstruction/rebuilds. I think its a big difference in the eyes of someone. With a reconstructed branded title, you assume the car has been put back together the way it was supposed to, with the title showing the branding due to a buy back, it was due to the fuel pump failing (3 times) which entitled the owners to sell the car back. Now obviously it is the law to disclose that on the title. The problem has been fixed with the newly revised pump and software, and is under bmw factory warranty, and the car is running down the road.
Theres a reason why bmw wont touch a car with a reconstructed branding, but they will still warranty the car that was a buy back due to the pump.

I posted a similar question. If you take a look at the thread there is a guy who bought a lemoned car and has had no problems.
