Some People Just Don't Get It
Guy Invites 5 couples to a Birthday dinner for his wife who is turning 30. 4 out of 5 of those couples have to travel to this dinner from out of town and find lodging for themselves. The dinner is at a moderately priced venue (AKA Houston's). All attedees to the dinner are gainfully employed professionals. One couple (brother and sister in law of birthday girl) host a brunch the next day at their home in her honor. The parents of the birthday girl host a dessert after dinner following the dinner.
Question: When the Dinner bill comes, what should the husband do? |

Are you talking about the birthday dinner, or the dessert ??
It should have been clear to the attendees who was picking up the dinner bill way before the event happened. |

The husband invited the guests and they are paying for their own hotels, he should at least make the gesture of paying for the dinner.

1) He's inviting them to their birthday dinner. The guests can offer to pay but he should definitely turn them down. 2) The guests have to travel and find lodging. They have their own expenses to worry about.

As supporting evidence, here was the invite:
Hey all, Although this is heavily overshadowed by recent 'advancements' to our family, ------ is about to turn 30, and I'm trying to put a little something together to celebrate. We have a babysitter lined up for Friday, Feb. 20, and have a reservation for the ------- (near our apartment) for 7:45pm. I'd love to have you (and your significant others) come join us for dinner. We'll be serving dessert at our apartment afterward. Please let me know if you can make it, so that I can finalize the reservation. I hope to see you then... ---- |

if everyone was local then i guess it's up in the air although the husband should still pay. But since people were from out of town so they had to pay for their costs of transportation and stay, the husband should DEFINITELY pay.
so who ended up paying? |

Not to mention garaging your car in the city on top of hotels?!
The Husband has no expense BUT the dinner and a little oral sex later one. Everyone else is investing, not only travel time, but also money to get there and find a place to stay.

It'd be different if a few of our friends decided to take him out for his bday and we all went to a place that everyone agreed upon. Then we'd cover his portion of the bill. |

This situation should be looked at from both perspectives.
1: usually if it's someone's bday and I'm invited to go I would pay for myself and together we would pay for the birthday boy/girl. It doesn't matter if I had to fly to the party. If the person is close enough as a friend/family member/etc. then it's only right if we at least pay for ourselves. To me it's like a pot luck, everyone chips in. 2: on the other hand, if the invitation was meant to be looked at as a "bday party" then the host should pay. What I meant is that if you go to a bday party you better not be paying. But it's always better to assume that you're paying for dinner. This is what I always do unless it was made clear. |

A few months ago a friend had a bday dinner at a local restaurant and he's invited some people. We all paid for ourselves and covered his portion as well. I don't know if "Americans" think any differently but that's how I feel. |
