Fair question. Let me first point out that there is a difference between m-sport and the sport package, which I will try to identify below. I'll pull this all from memory and I am certain someone will point out my mistakes:

Sport package normally includes
- slightly larger wheels than stock, and in a staggered size
- lowered suspension; if x-drive, not lowered all that much if any
- sport seats; seat heat is a separate option
- sport wheel with some chrome on the lower spoke; heat is a separate option
- if auto trans, you should see paddle shifters that would otherwise not be included
- gloss black trim

M-sport adds these items to the sport package
- larger wheels unique to m-sport in a staggered size
- lowered suspension, unless x-drive
- lower, larger side-sills
- sporty-looking bumpers that closely resemble M3 bumpers, especially up front
- black headliner and pillar fabric
- m-sport wheel, which is thicker and cooler than the sport wheel; I don't believe heat was an option for this wheel until LCI perhaps

The m-sport option is rare on its own. Adding in manual transmission to RWD gets you the expensive unicorn. Any manual-trans wagon is worth a little more than an auto. It might be fair to say a wagon with RWD, m-sport and manual is worth $10k more than one with x-drive, auto and no m-sport or sport package, everything else being equal.

My e91 has sport while my e90 has m-sport, so I live with both. I will always pay the little bit extra for m-sport when I can find it, but not $10k.

hope that helps.

Rarity. There were 48 M Sport 6MT RWD examples produced. I have one of these as well as a RWD sport package auto. They’re both good cars. At this point you can buy several e91s or 1 unicorn for the same money. E90 and E92s are a dime a dozen but the wagons are still rare-ish due to their production numbers.

I ordered an e92 6MT M Sport, then bought a 128i in the same spec because the e92 felt too big for a 2 door. I wanted an e91 in the same spec is the simple answer why I paid the premium 2 years ago.

That said I’m still on the hunt for a red 6MT to do an M3 front clip and whatever else that rabbit hole leads to 🙈

The other simple answer is that there is no modern equivalent. You cannot buy a brand new RWD manual inline 6 wagon in the United States, period. I love that formula and so do quite a few other people. F31s are boring to drive as are all the garbage SUVs that BMW builds today. To each their own, though.

Not just RWD inline 6 wagons are gone. There aren't a lot of MT wagons with any driveline to choose from now that VW is no longer going to sell wagons in the US.

According to their website, Subaru sells the 2019 Impreza wagon with a 5-speed. They don't call it a wagon, but Honda sells its 2020 4-door Civic hatch with a 6-speed and VW will still sell the Golf hatchback. There's the Jeep Wrangler, of course -- but I don't think I could put up with the handling after a BMW. (Or I'd put it on its roof.)

KBB calculator says that my 31K mile ZSP/6-speed/RWD example is worth $5,629 as a trade-in. (NO, it's not for sale, what could I replace it with???)

1.) There is some (apparent) mispricing of E91s in the marketplace, so there are probably bargains to be had 2.) My ZSP's front bumper scrapes on the pavement enough -- and I think the M-Sport bumper is even lower. 3.) Nobody has ever sold more than a handful of MT fun wagons in the US recently. My 22-year old Volvo MT T5 wagon is even rarer than the BMW. (This is the free market at work. If they sold 'em, they would still build 'em!)

MT wagons are pretty much gone, but even the 8th generation Corvette is AT only. You can order a Porsche 992 with a PDK now, but the 7-speed is coming at the end of the year, or early next year. Maybe.

I have to tip my hat to BMW marketing for not only keeping MTs in the M-Sport line, but then getting us to pay $10-20K more to shift for ourselves!

ppointer summed it up nicely, but I'll just add the shadowline exterior trim and anthracite headliner. Let's not forget the exclusive options available once you added the M Sport package: Le Mans Blue paint and Aluminium Glaciersilver trim, along with style 193 (18") or 194 (17") wheel options. When you add it up I think it was well worth the $3500 package for suspension, seats, steering wheel, and aero package upgrades.

I purchased a non M-sport wagon and test drove an M-sport version beforehand. The seats and steering wheel are fantastic and there is no denying the exterior bumper aesthetics are improved.

I have other dedicated sports cars in my garage and I found the wagon sport suspension to be overly stiff for the purpose I use it for - run flats or not. So I found a choice non-M stick shift example and saved a chunk of money. I will certainly upgrade to Bilstein struts when the OEM suspension is tired out. The wagon gets driven in the worst weather, to home depot and is the baby hauler. I enjoy every minute of it.

Green one is best of the three, with good price. Still won't get any due to that crap tan interior color. I hate it.
Does the ZHP shift knob reduce shifter length vs OE?

As for MSport, I've seen sedan with M3 front end. Nothing you can't get off www.car-part.com to get the bits. Hell, I'd buy the auto wagon with all the stuff I like, then grab a wrecked 328xi and transfer all the drivetrain and ECU.

Ain't that hard when all the 100k+ miles need you to drop the subframe for oil pan gasket change and remove transmission for clutch replacement anyway!

I'm very happy with the Bilstein b6 I picked up a couple years back (eBay set with 500 miles on it), and am on my way home from home depot right now! TT is parked for the winter, and the Chevy can stay with it's 100k while I enjoy the f*** out of the wagon

Speaking of options, I should install the roof speakers now that ECS found me some brackets!

This is my e91 and I also have it listed on here. Yes the ZHP shift knob is a little shorter and feels better material wise then the stock one. I also have the stock one for anyone who might prefer that.

But I am a little sketched out about buying one from a used car lot. Does anyone have any more info on this particular car? I am several states away, otherwise I would go check it out myself.
Saw and ignored this awhile back and then it came up again on another search. Pursued and eventually bought it. It arrived tonight. Body is in need of some paint correction, PDR, and touch up but overall seems clean.

Interior is probably 95%

Mechanically I don't know yet. It's giving me the "lighting error" right now, the driver window switch controls the passenger window, and the iDrive controller won't actually work. I'll start looking into those soon but it seems to run well otherwise in my short drive from where it was dropped off by the transport truck to home.

Ultimately I didn't care about the mechanicals as I will be swapping in an M57 engine, 330d manual transmission, and other goodies to make a manual diesel RWD wagon but wanted to start with something in blue with low miles and a clean history and Carfax. So far I'd say it was a decent buy. I did save a bit compared to asking price but not much.

Looks like someone stayed off the forum radar and palated the asking premium on that blue 'M-sport' in WA...she gone. Exterior wise, that was really a close to perfect e91 with the M-sport bumpers, 359M wheels, exhaust, etc...plus miles were low at 55k.

In all, not a bad pickup...first e91 in awhile that got the nether region blood moving a bit. I'd be curious if the lucky buyer frequents this forum??
