I HATE the yellow corner reflectors on my car. They're not even amber, they're yellow, like egg yoke. I'm surprised BMW didn't make the turn signals LED amber like on the 3, 5, and 7. The only LED lights are the daytime running lamp LED rings and rear running lamp LED design.

If BMW can make the 3, 5, and 7 turn signals clear unless active without breaking US traffic safety laws, then why can't they do it on my car? I would even settle for the Euro-spec version of the turn signals on my car, which are clear with silver reflectors.

Is it against traffic safety regulations to have white/clear/silver corner reflectors, or was is just a way to make the car cheaper? How can I have this part switched out? I searched the realOEM collection and it does not indicate a difference between reflectors in US vs. Euro-spec F25s. There isn't a part number for just the reflectors.

Help :
you can do this:

you can give vs a pm about it, i like this the best, works when you turn on the signal but is off when your driving

Let's hope you're right.

I have a feeling BMW did this just so they can have something to refresh when the LCI year comes around.

oh for that reflector you're gonna have to crack the headlights (notoriously difficult on BMW), buy an overlay like the one you made fun of Al for having, or shell out the money for European parts

Brian that Msport leather shift knob, is the whole M illuminated and numbers? I assume I just splice into the lighter feed? Or should I look around up in there for a connector?

yea the whole pattern, numbers and ////////////////////M get illuminated. I can't remember for sure cuz I didn't have it in my car very long but I think it only illuminated based on whether the headlights/dash lights were on...if you tap into a switched power wire it will simply always be on. We can double check by just putting it back in my car where I have the correct connection obviously and see

Yeah, hence the "After all that time I spent bitching about how you mod your cars, I am now wanting to mod my car."

Fuck. I don't want to buy the whole headlight. The innermost bulb doesn't even do anything. The corner illuminators are also the fog lights, unlike the 3, 5, and 7, which utilize the innermost halogen bulb as the corner illuminators.

Answered my own question:

Wikipedia Article: Automotive Lighting

Quote:
Retroreflectors (also reflex reflectors) produce no light of their own, but rather reflect incident light back towards its source, e.g., another driver's headlight. They are regulated as automotive lighting devices, and specified so as to account for the separation between a vehicle's headlamps and its driver's eyes. Thus, vehicles are conspicuous even when their electrically-powered lighting system is off or disabled. Regulations worldwide require each vehicle to be equipped with rear-facing red retroreflectors.[5][15] Since 1968 North American regulations also require side-facing retroreflectors, amber in front and red in the rear.[5] Sweden, South Africa and other countries have at various times required white front-facing retroreflectors.

Yea, don't have the new X3 headlight memorized, I thought you were talking about external reflectors (like the orange/red ones on my car in my sig) or like on E92s on the front of the fenders

I think BMW has to have the most complicated headlight/turn signal apparatus in the entire world. There is nothing easy, simple or user friendly about it...

I mean, I am talking about the external reflectors. But they're set into the headlamp mount fixing, making my job more difficult than it should be.

Thanks for your help, guys.

Seems out of date. I know legality surrounding turn signals allows for either amber, or white on front/side and red in rear. This was changed pretty recently. Wouldn't surprise me if this was reflected (pun intended har har har) in your situation as well

Thanks for your help, guys.
The ones you posted are in the headlights - in between the housing and the clear plastic. For example, I can get to my reflectors without removing and cracking the headlight, but the ones you posted you must remove the headlight, open it, make your modification, and reseal it. There are people who do this, OSS could probably perform it for you, but given they primarily work on E9x's, you'd most likely be without your headlights for a few weeks...

taking the headlight apart shouldnt be hard, just alot of patience, i have done alot but seeing that a bmw headlight is so much more than a supra headlight, acura and honda headlight i would suggest possibly looking for a set or one headlight and testing it out

Exactly.

God; when BMW says "this option is for special order and requires special consideration. Please contact your local BMW sales center. We'd be happy to build it exactly as you like," I'd like that to mean each and every last detail of the car. Of course that would cost $200,000. They wouldn't even do the anthracite headliner as a custom build without the M-sport package unless I was willing to pay an extra $5,000. And, when I asked if I could have the car painted in any of the BMW paintjobs, they said that would be another $4,000.

Oh capitalism--teasing me with the gifts it offers by obstructing my means by which to receive those gifts.
