Thanks to Weebl, I have found out the name and what is going on with this ship I saw the other day. It is the USS Holland, one of the first Ballistic Missile Submarine tenders, launched in 1963 in Mississippi and decommissioned in 1996 in Guam. It is being readied at Mare Island for its journey via the Panama Canal to Galveston TX where it will be scrapped. It was named for John Phillip Holland, considered the father of the modern submarine.

A common house gecko that I spotted on an end table last night. Every house in Hawaii will have a few. They can make a chirping sound.

Mark, you're really giving me the itch to do more architectural shooting.

You're making great use of that new lens.

Nice Dragonfly Dave, I've spent too much time trying just to get one. Still trying...

I don't think I've ever gotten one by saying to myself, "I think I'll find and shoot a dragonfly today."

They've been targets of opportunity for me. I was stopped by the road trying to spot a deer fawn when I noticed this guy flying around an perching on a nearby bush. I took about 50 shots, with the 70-200mm and the 500mm, both with the 2.0x TC attached. I was aided by A1 Colorado morning sunshine. I take so many shots because getting enough DOF to get the eyes, body and wings in focus can be tough with all that magnification at MFD. This one, the light hit the wings in an exceptional way vs. the others.

When you do see one perching, they tend to use the same perch over and over. I went back the next day and it was still there. 30 more shots and none were as good as this in this really nice light.

Oh, that's another of my principles, if the light gets killer, I get desperate for a subject. Almost anything will look good in exceptional light. Often that special light will only last seconds and it's unusual for it to last for more than a few minutes. I blew a chance for a stellar cloud shot Saturday by trying to drive three-minutes to get into a better position. I should have jumped out of the car, taken a safety shot and then driven to a better spot. The clouds went from incredible to ordinary in a very short time.

Thanks, Dave. Cool dragonfly shot. I was out with the local butterfly club (run by the university bio profs) last week and got lots of dragonfly and butterfly shots with the 400 5.6. The big issue with using that lens is the distance you need to be from your subject.

That particular lens is no great shakes at MFD. OTOH, working at 9 to 12-feet, with my 500mm/2xTC/25mmET is luxurious. My 70-200mm f/4 also has a nice, close MFD and is great for near macro shooting, particularly with the 2.0xTC and the ET. The 400/5.6 doesn't have that great a MFD and you lose too much additional light when you start adding TCs and ETs.

That's one reason I jumped at the chance to grab a 70-200 f2.8 IS, even if it is version I. It should be very usable with the TCs.

You'll put the IS to good usage, particularly if you start hanging TCs and ETs on it, which I highly recommend. I personally think that buying lenses in this focal length and beyond is a pretty iffy proposition. Of course, I hand hold almost everything, thanks to IS.
