It is important for the gasses to be hot enough to get the cat to do the chemical reaction. The gasses cool as the travel down the downpipe and then more so when they are in the exhaust (past the DP's outlet). The more forward the better is my point. This is why it is discussed by some of us to gut the DPF but use the DOC built into the front of it. Other point is diesel ex gasses are cooler than gasoline ex gasses.

Perhaps exhaust wrap to keep the heat into the cat?

120 pages - and what I gather is that Ecotune is not well received in the North American market because of the poor fitting pipe and the ECU flash causing or masking other codes.
Can someone advise if these problems are specific to the North American models only as I have a European 330D? What replacement pipe is everyone using? The forum user that supplied some people with a pipe seems to be no longer active. Thank you. |

Thanks Puerto Rican 335d.
What about the quality of the Ecotune pipe? It has been mentioned some difficulty aligning the faces and installing the V-clamp? |

The problem wasn't the rear flange nor the V band flange. It was the orientation of the O2 sensor bung. Looking aftward and using clock dial reference, it was pointing at about 10:30 to 11:00 position and needed to be rolled out to more like 9 o'clock. Bohl diesel moved mine. [once again, why the heck was he banned?]. He also cut off the pressure sensor tubes and welded little nubs over to seal them.

I had a look on the Bohl Diesel website and it has a picture of the DPF pipe which I noticed earlier in this thread. The workmanship on the replacement pipe appears to be of a high standard which initially was why I posted on this thread.
I understand that most North American (and South American) have 335D's but this model was only imported into Australia for a short period and the majority are 320D and 330D's here. The emission standards in Australia follow the Euro limits with Euro 5 currently the standard. This may explain why it appears why the European vehicle has three orifices and the N & S American appears to have only two. Thanks again to everyone for their valued input. |

I hope all is OK. He pioneered a bunch and is still working on great things we enjoy as mods on our vehicles. But while once praised for customer service, I have also had no luck getting in touch. I am about an hour and half drive away from said shop and it would be my pleasure to have him wrench on the car. Next time I am up near Albany, I will try to stop by and maybe introduce myself.

Jess has moved on to bigger and better things on engines people depend on for a living. He's even sold his car but will always have the X5. I think all of us who have had contact with him and now reap the benefits of his skills would agree that he is a class act.

Pros: - Reduced rank exhaust smell when idling in traffic. - Less of a cloud of death behind me during regular driving. Cons: - Still smells like @$$. But not as bad as when it was straight pipe. I still have to roll up the windows and turn off the air if I idle too long in traffic as the smell just kind of starts wafting around the car. (depends on the direction of wind too.) Did it meet my expectations? I think it'd be hard to compare to the lack of any unpleasant smells that all the stock emissions equipment took care of. But my equipment was all failing and doing the ABC delete and getting tuned was the cheaper option. That said, the cat did help with reducing the smell and visible exhaust smoke. Better than nothing?
