Regarding the "Readiness" stuff ...
http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=603569 Is this nonsense really necessary?!?! You have to follow this specific drive cycle pattern to even get the vehicle to attempt to trigger the OBD "readiness" tests? I'm certain I haven't done this specific driving pattern since the latest remap came back. I'm not even sure how to duplicate this exact driving pattern in a safe manner on the roads around here. |

I learned something new today. Here in PA diesel autos are exempt from emissions testing. We are only required to do the annual safety check. (brakes, tires, horn, lights, etc)
So from my understanding, for Pennsylvania, I can still pass state inspection even with the check engine light on. However, the readiness monitors are indeed what PA uses to enforce emissions testing for the gassers. It wouldn't suprise me if this changes for diesels as their volumes increase. |

As an aside, i wonder which other states also only have safety inspection for diesels. Mark tells us PA. I also offer my home state TX. I thought i recalled TDI saying Iowa also wasn't emission testing diesels.
Running list, PA, TX, IA |

Here is a breakdown of the requirements in California:
For "Smog Counties" (Basically counties that are in/near major population centers- SF/LA/Sac/etc.):
For all other CA counties void of human life:
My experience has shown that the technicians are very lazy on the visual inspection. I think that any mods made that don't cause a check engine light and don't look obvious- you'll be fine. However, when CA changes the OBD readiness check requirement, we will be SOL. -Ed

Readiness is required for diesels in NY. BMW wasn't able to inspect my car (335d) due to certain monitors still not is ready mode, after they reflashed the DDE. It needed to go thru the drive cycles.
My take on this drive cycles: just driving the car around 2-3 days will set everything in ready mode. It is not necessary to follow the drive cycle procedure as published by BMW. I learned this the hard way on my 135i. |

To add a little more on the readiness, it prevents someone from fooling the inspection process by resetting the check engine light a block away before getting the car inspected.

Although it does appear some owners report not having to do the cycles in the specific order, or even during the same drive cycle. I can say that I purposely avoid doing the first and last segments of that test as its a waste of resources and time, so some of those items would never trigger a readiness state. And my normal driving routine would also not trigger the middle two segments either. I may try to do a purposeful 2 rounds of the specific test cycles to see what happens with the readiness situation. |

I was thinking the issues of potentially failing emission inspection would be relevant to a "DPF Delete" thread? And the EGR stuff was all related to the DPF modifications ... But I'll stop updating if its not of interest to those reading this thread.

While this may have gotten off topic from a dpf delete, I am very interested to see TDIs regular updates and data logs for his EGR 'mods'. I hope to see more updates either here or in a different thread as I'm sure many of us have interest. Thanks!

TDI please keep posting updates. For most of us DPF Delete is only an option if we can pass emissions. Both of those are related.

It's all related to the restricted emissions which messes up the ride.
EGR delete, DPF delete, every little bit of info helps. Emissions tests are also related to the DPF delete as for some people it may offer advance knowledge to pull the trigger or not. |

No one is doing DPF delete and/or EGR delete without coding. I don't think anyone wants a coded DDE that won't pass annual inspection (safety and emissions). Let us know if you get all the monitors in ready mode. Also, you can mention this to the tuner (Ecotune), they should know about this. |
