NICE! I wish I was able to go somewhere warm. I'll be going to Toronto in May for 2 weeks.

It's that time of the year already! We have some time share down at the Taino Beach Resort in Freeport. I am definitely game when I get back though! Hopefully all this white stuff will be gone and I can enjoy some cruising with the windows down.

E30

Has anybody else noticed an abundance of E30s recently? I must have seen ten of them over the weekend. Most looked in pretty good shape too, considering the most recent is coming up on 20 years old. Maybe some 20 year leases just finished up?

I have a soft spot for E30s and if I had space I would for sure pick one up. There is a 318is in craiglist that doesn't look too bad...

How old was the 900? Again, if I had the space I would pick up a late-80s 900 turbo convertible. They are the last of the old school Saabs, back from when they had some character. Nowadays they are just another boring bland brand...

You would not believe how dirty my car got over the weekend. It was a disgrace It's all clean now and back in the garage until I get my summer wheels in a couple weeks...

OK guys I would like your advice on a new set of wheels. With the recent addition to my family, comes the need for a larger vehicle. We are keeping the E90, but need to replace my daily driver: A Chevy extended cab pick-up. There are some requirements:

1. must get the same or better MPG than my truck (15-18 mpg).
2. must be able to tow a decent load (3500lbs min) with ease: I tow a steel 12ft trailer loaded with utility quads in the summer.
3. must be able to do lite offroad work (unimproved roads up north) Nothing serious.
4. I'd prefer it to be from a European manufacturer

So I'm thinking about these as potential candiates: X3, X5, VW Touareg 2, & Volvo XC90. Probably all CPO purchases. Any others?

Now Kevin has warned me to stay away from the early 04-05 Touaregs, but if anyone has any experience with any other vehicle, I'd love to hear it. I'm hoping to pull the trigger on something as soon as my employment status changes

Yup, I've noticed that too. Its tempting to pick one up as a commuter car/errund runner.

I agree with Nick in that I would probably stick to something American or Japanese for actual work. You don't want to get stuck with a massive repair bill in the event that something goes wrong with one of these European trucks.

However, if you are intent on European, why not consider a Range Rover or a Discovery?

I would also suggest looking into the Toyota Sequoia.

I think you'd be better off with a Tahoe, Yukon, or something like that. For real work and daily kid hauling I'd almost have to say stick with a GM truck. What about a quad cab 1/2 ton Chev or GMC with the 5.3?

Also, what do you have exactly right now? I'm assuming full size Chev 1/2 ton...

Nick
On paper the all meat the requirements, but I just don't know how well. I've driven all but the XC90. The VW is actually quite a workhorse.

I currently have a 95 K1500 which was been modded a bit: tweaked suspension, build x-mission, and a 383 stroker which sounds like a drag car! I'm not sure if I want another GM product. All of the recent ones I've driven have terrible fit and finnish and are generally poor quality. Plus the whole bail out put a bad tast in my mouth.

I would also only buy Euro, and I would lean towards a Cayenne (S or turbo as the V6 is a bit weak) or an X5. There is some good value to be had at the moment with these, but you will more than likely be out of warranty, so if something goes wrong, it will be $$$. The Cayenne is actually pretty good offroad too, as long as you have the right tires.

Here's a nice X5 I found at the weekend - just needs the nasty chrome rims swapped out.

The current Discovery (or LR3 here) is also a good choice, especially for off road use. A friend of my Dad is on his third and has only great things to say about them. I'm not too fond of the interior though.

That is a sweet 4.8is! Yes those rims are hidious. They look like the correct wheels for the 4.8is, but chromed?!. The Discovery's are nice, but I'm with you on the interior. This is kind of a pickle of a situation.

Thanks for the input guys.

Well guys, 3 weeks and no snow...

Would it be fair to say that my summers can make an appearance in another 3 weeks? I don't want to become too optimistic and have my dreams crushed by another snow storm. I don't think I will be able to recover.

Minnesota natives care to chime in (Brad, Martin, Nick, Gary.....)
