We had one "snow day" in Maine. I woke up to the sun beaming through my windows, confused, it was about 1-2hr after school was supposed to start and the day was gorgeous. I went downstairs to ask what was going on and my parents informed me that the snow melt from the beautiful weather had flooded the river so they called school off.

I had one day where I got a ride to school because windchill was -60 and they said you would die in about 15 minutes so mom sucked it up and drove me in...still walked home and it was probably still -10 or worse with the sun up.

In Maine the walking vs bus riding limit was 1 mile and we lived like .95 miles from the school so kids deeper in the neighborhood got to ride the bus while we walked.

I enjoyed it though, gave you time to think.

Walking to and from school is so healthy - my kids both have gotten to do it for k-5. And will get to again in HS.
