I always was under the impression that staggered handles better, or was it better traction.

Handles better to a certain extent. It induces more oversteer, letting the car rotate more. Most cars are built from factory to induce understeer (since its technically safer). So to counter that (all things being equal), you go with a square setup.

Their are obviously other ways other then a square setup to get ride of understeer, camber and toe in/ toe out can also give you the same results. Its just a matter of finding the right balance.

haha, i prefer the staggered look as well, but i figure im not winning any beauty pageants anyways, so fawk it

fwiw, on his e90, harold is running 265's all around!

265 square setup > 235/275 staggered setup
