Phaedrus BMW in San Francisco?
Found Phaedrus BMW in SF in the recommended shops on the list in this thread.
They get a combined 4.5 star rating on Yelp but, like most Yelp reviews, there are those w/1 star experiences. One guy in particular posted a very detailed and specific 1 star review back in Jan 2014; it's not just a wild rant. That kind of review worries me because it's just not a wild rant. Has anyone here used them and have anything good/bad to say about them?

Phaedrus BMW in SF gets a FAIL in my book. Called for an estimate yesterday. They took my name/# for a call back. Never got a call back.
Made an appt w/Kahler's Werkstatt in Dublin instead. Got estimate while on the phone and they are throwing in a rental car for free. Kahler's serviced my Porsche 944 Turbo years ago and always liked the service they provided, even though I had to travel to SF to get my Porsche serviced there. So, thought I'd try Kahler's w/my BMW. Performance Technic recently moved around the corner from Kahler's. Used them when they were in Livermore to put a set of shocks in and to do an alignment but wasn't all that impressed w/their shop/customer service and they have more limited hours than Kahler's. Will walk around the corner to take a look at Performance Technic's set up when I drop the car off at Kahler's just to see if their set up is any better or different than it was in Livermore. We'll see how it goes and I'll report back later.

Just got my car back earlier today from Kahler's Werkstatt in Dublin and I have to say that it was the BEST car service related experience that I've had in many years.
My 2008 335i has 95k miles on it now. I bought it just about 2 years ago w/85k on it. So, I don't drive it much. It was time for an oil/filter change and at nearly 100k miles I thought it was also due for a tranny oil/filter change and diff oil change. Total cost was $1240. Oil/filter change $89, Diff oil change $177 and Trans/filter pan change $954; the filter is built into the pan in my tranny and had to be replaced to change it. Cost of the pan/filter/gasket was about $250. So, the work was pricey but the cost was as quoted (there were no surprises) and the cost was comparable to what I was quoted by other shops. As we all (should) know by now, owning a BMW isn't cheap. Anyway, what made the experience great for me was the service provided. Ash (the service mgr) gave me a rental car credit w/Enterprise for $35. Actual cost was only $32. He even made the reservation in advance for me; found out after I called the rental office to make sure they had a car for me. Got a Chrysler 200 (which is not my type of car) but it's a pretty good deal for just $32. This particular Enterprise office is very well run. Dealt w/the manager, Rebecca, and pickup my car and got a quick ride back to Kahlers after I dropped it off. So, the total service experience for me was as smooth as it can get. So, if you live in or relatively close to the Dublin area and you need to get work done that you can't do yourself, I recommend you try Kahlers.

Anyone recommend a good place for coilover installation that isn't too pricey? Need KW V2's installed and possibly a intercooler installed as well.

If you're willing to go to Fremont, check out ST Modified. Sean is a good guy and definitely an enthusiast himself with a modded 335i that he takes to the track and serves as his DD as well.

I went today morning to Fast Lane European in Santa Clara based on the suggestions here.I met Mason, the owner of the shop. He was professional and more to the haughty side. Not the best feeling I got after I left from there. I felt I wasn't welcome there.
I took my 98 E39 528i for a brake job (Rotors, Pads, Lines, Sensors) and also for plugs and fuel filter. I was quoted $210 per axle for the Rotors and Pads not including the brake flush and lines , 100 for the spark plugs and another 100 for the fuel filter. I had all the parts with me for the work like rotors, pads, lines, plugs and fuel filter. he was reluctant to use aftermarket parts and wont be able to warranty the work after that. I understand his skepticism about the quality of parts. But they were Eline rotors from R1concepts for E39 528i. He said his shop will use only OEM parts and he does aftermarket installation rarely. Also his shop compares to the Stevens creek BMW across the street in cost and labor. I really wonder why will someone pay him dealer prices if he isn't one. Anyways, I said I will bring my 08 335i for Waterpump/Thermostat replacement, he quoted $1250 for the job. Same prices for brake job on the 335i. No reduction in prices for more work. May be I'm out of touch with the labor prices. but I think $210 per axle for brake job is very high for a non dealership shop. My friend recently got this Brake job done excluding lines for $50 per wheel. Sorry Mason, you are not getting my business. I took it to another Indie shop and they are doing it for $375 for all four wheels including the lines and brake flush, $100 for the plugs and $60 for the fuel filter. I'm going to do more DIY from now on. /Rant off |

Shops who refuse to install customer provide parts also usually say that they will not guarantee non-OEM parts but no shop will warranty any parts (OEM or not). However, they should always stand behind the quality of the work done to install those parts; ie., a problem caused by faulty installation, not the fault of the part, should be warrantied by the shop. Any parts guarantee would be provided by the seller/manufacturer of the parts and any labor to replace such parts would still have to be paid for by the customer, as long as the shop did not install them improperly. Just saying . . .

I'd like to add another local bmw repair shop that I've used a few times that does excellent work. Had a oil change done a few days ago and he did it very quickly in only 20 minutes!! He also uses bmw oil and filter which he gets from east bay bmw, which is less than a mile from where his shop is located. And his pricing for an oil change was very good!! Also had a new battery installed yesterday and it was excellent. Will probably use him for my maintenance needs. He's a independent mechanic and works on all types of cars.

Thought I'd go ahead and recommend Evan at Performance Autowerk in Dublin. Took my E46 there for a second opinion after basically getting a death sentence from another shop nearby (which I've seen highly recommended by M owners). Very knowledgeable guy who is very generous with his time and willingness to talk things through. E46 lives and I will be taking my E90 M3 there for future service without hesitation.
