Haha! That would definitely void the warranty if the DDE had any troubles.

No it wouldn't. Pop out the chip and take the car in.

Some of you guys are just scared shitless of the dealers.

Naw not scared of the dealers.

Soldering a chip to the assembly can be a problem if you do not follow proper ESD procedures. Anytime you screw with OEM electronics can void your warranty. Even if you remove the chip, there are always evidence that something was there. Depends how much of a dick the OEM wants to be.

ESD can cause latent failures that can show up much later after the original mod.

I agree with the ESD concept. All you need is a insulated workbench, your electronics grounded, and you wearing a ESD band, which needs to be grounded as well. I know my tuner follows these procedures, as he works on encrypted ECU's very often, and i was there when he did mine. OEM's can physically check and see if the ECU has been tampered, but most of them wont, because the car is under warranty, and they make warranty repair money. If you go to them for an issue after your warranty has been expired, they may refuse you a good will repair if they find out about it at that point.

Mentioned this to Jarek last time I saw him and he didn't seem too interested as he said the demand for it simply isn't there for the X5.

Jarek might want to consider that X5 has continued on for 2012, 2013, 2014, and now 2015. This compared to only the 3 yr run of the M57 in our 335Ds. 3 year vs 7 year run in terms of volume purchased. I know the N57 is now in them but the math is right there. Perhaps the demographic of the X5 owner is more apt to not hop up the vehicle in comparison to the 3 series owner. I'm guessing on the last point, though.
