Plus, it was a rear passenger window where the cop went up to. All SUV comes tinted in the rear windows.

I feel for the cop that go shot and killed, but I don't agree with the fact that we cannot drive witho our tinted windows from another state into NYC. That just doesn't make sense. That may be the law, but it just doesn't make sense to me.

Again, no disrespect for the fallen officer, my prayers are with him and his family.
I understand your argument but it is what it is. They do have RADAR/LIDAR detectors that are hardwired into the vehicle, front grill/ rear license plate as well.

State laws vary throughout the country, but you cannot go into another state expecting to be governed but your home state's laws.

As stated on the board, most cops do pull over for any infraction to see if you have done anything major(warrants etc.), many of the country's most wanted criminals were caught on "stupid infractions". They do it for a reason, god bless them.

I've been pulled over many of times for the most stupid things, not signaling, tail light out, license plate light out etc., they would run my license, plate and send me on my way. Not once have I received a ticket I didn't deserve.

while i agree with what rimola said, i also dont, simply because the cops are there to enforce there law as well as out of state laws, and since you are from NJ they know the law pretty well. now if you were from FL, where it is legal for a certain percentage tint, then im sure they wouldn't bust your balls, but you had NJ plates on and they know that it is illegal there im sure, so thats why you got the ticket. i hate the front plate and knock on wood, i have yet to be pulled over.

Actually, in many instances you can, thus the confusion here. Check out the Privileges and Immunities Clause (aka Comity Clause) in Article IV, § 2, clause 1 of the U.S. Constitution.

I dont think that works. There is actually a section in the NJ dmv where you have to fill out an application and it has a list of diseases which require tints and you have to get his signed by your doctor. If they catch you lying, your doctor will most likely lose his/her license.

They are cracking down in Chinatown too...a roadblock on Bowery, near Canal to the Manhattan Bridge. I was going southbound, the officers were busy talking. No officers move or motion to stop, I just went pass them. I have 35% tints all around.

if there were a bunch of police vans, those are portable gamma ray/ radiation detectors. they sometimes deploy the bridges that take trucks. usually the vans say "TRUCK ENFORCEMENT" on the side.

The houston st exit on the FDR often has a checkpoint on friday/sat night. you have the FDR entrance and exit traffic, local n/s and e/w traffic, all coming to a four way stop/ traffic circle. roll down your windows and they'll leave you alone.

Every state have different laws, you oblige by the laws in the state your in. I don't understand the confusion here?

Some states have speed limits of 70, can you drive 70 in NYS? No. Some states allow tints, can you drive in NYS with tints? No.

My point wasn't that I can violate any old NY laws because the same conduct in NJ isn't prohibited. My point was that there's a part of our Constitution that protects people as they travel between the states. In addition, reciprocity agreements regarding vehicle codes (and many other things) are quite common between the states. Given those facts, it's natural that some people will expect to be free from interference or prosecution because their personal property doesn't comply with some minor aspect of a foreign state's motor vehicle code.

Maybe you think that's an unjustified expectation, and maybe it is in some cases, but that's a different discussion.

in plain english, you have to abide by whatever state you are currently in, not the state your car belongs too, with the exception of windows tinted and front plates.

I did lots of research on this before tinting my windows, I thought thats a ridiculous reason to get pulled over and ticketed.
NYS law permits tints on all windows except for windshield as long as they are NOT darker than 35%.
Cops actually have a tool that allows them to measure the amount of light coming through the windows. Obviuously this will be skewed at night but if he did not use the tool you can totally beat the ticket in court.
More than likely he was just a ballbuster looking for DUIs.

errr... i dont know where you did your research, but NYS law states 70% VTL
meaning the glass has to transmit 70% of visible light.

tint is graded in % of VTL, so 35% tint only lets through 35% of visible light.

partially right...tinted windows, YES...front plate no. plates are part of the registration system. a PA no front plate vehicle may drive through whatever state he or she wants to and not be bothered about its missing front plate. tint on the other hand is a cosmetic factor, which in reality is seen as a threat to any LEO in whatever state since not being abke to see inside your vehicle is a major problem.

i sure hope they pass the new state law (NJ) where your next tinted window citation will exceed $400

knock on wood but I've never had a problem with tint (35%) on my car. I drive by those bridge and tunnel check points all the time.

I think the cop may have been checking up on you because of the out of state plates.

NYS Law:

Windshield = Non-reflective tint is allowed on the top 6 inches of the windshield.

Front + Back Side Windows = Must allow more than 70% of light in.

Rear Window = Any darkness can be used.

hope this helps..

to clear up any misconceptions, here is the NYS law on tint:
Section 375(12-a)(b) states:

No person shall operate any motor vehicle upon any public highway, road or street:

. . . .

(2) the sidewings or side windows of which on either side forward of or adjacent to the operator's seat are composed of, covered by or treated with any material which has a light transmittance of less than seventy percent; or

(3) if it is classified as a station wagon, sedan, hardtop, coupe, hatchback or convertible and any rear side window has a light transmittance of less than seventy percent; or

(4) the rear window of which is composed of, covered by or treated with any material which has a light transmittance of less than seventy percent. A rear window may have a light transmittance of less than seventy percent if the vehicle is equipped with side mirrors on both sides of the vehicle so adjusted that the driver thereof shall have a clear and full view of the road and condition of traffic behind such vehicle.

Tint is graded in visible light transmitted, so 50% tint is 20% below the legal limit, 30% tint is 40%, 20%, 50% below, etc. effectively any tint in NYC is illegal as the only legal tint would be 75% (glass itself has a light tint). 75% tint is almost clear.

if you manage to piss off the cop, they can and will write you for all four windows unless u have an SUV or van. I have a friend thats NYPD that reserves this treatment for people that mouth off during a stop.
65 per window, including fees, 260 total.

He told me to roll up my window a bit and he flashed his light through the window. He said my windows look darker than usual, and that they have been cracking down on tinted cars lately, especially at night and on the weekends. So be careful driving around. I only have 35% tint too, which is pretty light. The ticket was $30. This was actually only my second time getting pulled over, and both were for my tint. (the other time I was in my old car in Chatham.) So I'm just giving you guys a heads up.

But this definitely won't stop me from keeping my tint on.
