272hp would be the DI ED model I think.
It really does come down to traffic conditions as much as how you drive. If you plot your average speed against economy you'll see the two tracking each other all the time (track usage excepted off course ![]() With mine I get about 37~38mpg on a mix of about 50/50 town and motorway by mileage, but 75/25 town/motorway by time. Especially at the moment as one of the two A-roads into my hometown is still being repaired following the flooding last July. ![]()

![]() I also average around 24mpg. One thing I've noticed on the motorway is that dropping the cruising speed from 90mph to 80mph (where legal ![]() It's also worth dropping into 5th at around 70mph, because it uses less fuel when trying to maintain speed uphill in the lower gear. |

mine's definitely not an ED no.
But when I use it for work it's cruise control 79mph all the way so gets a good 30+ mpg on the dash. Remember mine also runs a little leaner on minimal throttle demand - i.e. cruise situations SJ |

![]() Mine's giving 28.4 according to my spreadsheet. My fuel bill was just under £450 last month! (~2500 miles) Luckily very little came out of my pocket. I've lost track of the cost of fuel as I never look at how much per litre it is now. I do wish I had a diesel sometimes.

Mine is an auto so it does it for me, will try the 80mph thing and see if it make a difference.
Have to say though my brother in law has an e46 330d and he is only getting 30 odd but then soon as he gets on the motorway he hits 40mpg at around 85 ![]() Will see how I get on but at the mo it just feels like I am burning money ![]()

My manual E46 320D gives an average of 46mpg since new. The best run I ever had was 57.6mpg from Portsmouth to Norwich - this was a run when high speeds were not possible and prolonged driving at 50mph on account of road works and traffic.
I normally get 50 to 52 on a long run and 40 about town. I am pleased with this.

My E46 320d gave me about 43mpg on average. A peak of just over 60mpg was recorded on the way to a UK meet (where it promptly plumetted

25.2 is the best I've ever averaged for my normal mainly dual carriageway with some town commute. Not really impressed to be honest and I feel BMWs economy figures are way overstated.

Oh, and if a 2 litre petrol car and a 6 litre petrol car are stuck in the same traffic not accelerating any quicker than each other why will the 6 litre car burn way more fuel? mystery to me.

Have a look at this:
http://www.onlineconversion.com/fuel_consumption.htm It should be able to give you figures that you can better relate to. ![]()

Its ok. This forum has to sites. The US site where they drive the big engine and dont have any problems with the prises of their cars or the gas.
And then us form Europe who are paying a shitload of money for every move we make. And - he did ok i guess. I use to much gas. Much more then it says in the manuel. Even i drive real lazy i cant get it op on 20.5km/l as its suppose to do. He pushed it half the way i guess..... ![]()

You already answerd it your self. 2L vs 6L - Cylinderes need more fuel - they are 4L bigger.

68.9 mpg........what a load of old bollocks. You'd have to have the luck of a lottery winner to get much more than 50mpg in normal day to day driving.

i want to do the same run, but try and get a 335d, averaging under 12mpg... NOW THAT would be impressive, with a average speed of over a ton.

Thats a big drop in power, I'm not sure you'd like it. Try the 320D, it has the ED stuff as well and produces 177bhp so its a reasonable compromise. Of course a 323D would be the one to have, but there isn't one yet.....

there are big diff between the 2008 model and the engine they had in the pre 2008 models. 2008 engines runs more mpg. and have more bhp. They changed about 100 things to make it more economic - and faster.
I guess Tisme must have the 2008 model like me.

I wish a 2008 model, mine in Aug 04 registered, but I will have a 330D E90 later this year, and I will ask you folks for advice on my configuration. I got the 57.6 mpg over 150 miles as I was really lucky as I couldn't actually drive fast because of the traffic; I was stuck doing no more than 50-60 most of the way and there were no hills. I remember many road works and speeed restrictions. I've never had anything like this good mpg since; normally 50-52 on long runs. However, the 320D does full well in 6th and if the road is flat, 50-60 in 6th is quite economical.
