You spend too much time on R3V, what is going on with your tune?
Working on my XDF generation software. I was on vacation last week so not much happened.

Good to hear! Wonder if there's any chance of saving the regrinds with the data at hand and modifications to the DME via the open tuning tool once you find out how to muck about with the MSV80? Gonna be another month or more before work can start on my car.

No worries. Car's been sitting at the dealership since the end of June so no hurry.

Welk, not on the street of course, but not even on any of the high speed tracks?

Takes a long time to get all the way up to max speed. Don't think it could be done on a track.

Pete's correct, I think that the max speed on the 328i was electronically governed to 135. AA explained that their tune raises the electronic limiter 'beyond what I'll ever reach', but provided no specific number.

My PB max speed in this car was between 135 - 140 indicated at the end of the main straight at Pacific Raceway. Granted at that speed my attention is focused ahead at the 180 left turn at the end of the straight, so no more than a momentary glance at the instrument cluster.

The BMW speedo is set to read faster than actual speed.

So I've heard, but I have no interest in maximum speed - 130mph was more than plenty for my taste - even a fast course like VIR probably wouldn't get our cars near such a speed.

well, now you know the specific number - 158mph (actual speed, not what's indicated on the cluster).

...and IMO would never reach for that limit without first upgrading the stock suspension. I remember stock dynamics feeling frightening beyond 70.

Apparently it's ok up to 130mph stock and 150mph with a sport suspension. Add the BMW Performance Aero package for a little bit better downforce at very high speeds. Dynamics are stable as a friggin rock past 130 fwiw.

The car now feels as stable at 130 as it used to around 45 - I like....

Aero is on deck for next year. I was leaning towards the Performance Aero package, too. I didn't know it generates downforce. That's good news.

I need an intervention. I studied aero long ago, and it's a source of enjoyment to apply the principals to this car. Reduced drag and more downforce are my goals. To get there, the car could benefit with a full underbelly, extraction vents on the forward hood (not so much for heat extraction as reduced under-hood pressure), a more direct snorkel intake hose on the high=pressure part of the front bumper, a functional rear diffuser, and possibly vents behind the fenders to dump pressure.

I need help.

Yes, even with nos. It will retard timing, close the valves, cut fuel and spark to keep you there. If you hit nos at 150mph it would end very badly for your motor..

I'm hip... 80

The Aero package which includes the trunklid spoiler (using a Seibon CSL CF trunklid instead) changes a slight lift at the rear to a slight downward force, about sixty pounds iirc. It's been discussed here before.

Anything beyond this, and even the Aero package itself really, is essentially useless. If the car were lightened up, wayyyy up, adding aero downforce would be helpful but only when running at very high speed in sweepers on the track. And it would really require a properly tuned wing attached to the subframe and a lip, also properly tuned, to optimize aero downforce while iminimizing drag in the straights. A full underbody panel, hood vents, eliminating the cowl, building a true diffusor, etc. are great ideas for a race car but utterly pointless on the street since they don't really do much if anything below a hundred or so and even then it's pretty minor.

Note that the stock aero of the 3 series is good to 155mph otherwise the speed limiter would be lower for 335s and M3s or 150mph for ZSP 32xs.

Thanks for the sane observations. I had considered a functional wing and splitter. But come on, this is a station wagon!

I really need to stop tweaking the wagon and find a more appropriate platform to have fun with. We live in great times with so many exciting new options to consider. The new Vette and Mustang get my juices flowing. So does Porsche. But it's probably not as fun passing the occasional M3 or S4 in a Vette or 911 as a grocery hauler
