This is incorrect. Windows has no issues with multiple partitions on removable hard drives.

Agree on checking the Ram card. It's about the only basic thing you can do, beside backing up as suggested. Go to Radioshack and fill out the form to send in your HP. I had to do this a couple times with my HP. HP will call and give you diagnosis.

i worked on this one girl's pos HP last night. it had the same symptoms.

disconnect power, remove the battery, press power button for 30 seconds.
turn it on and see if that helped. in my 12+ in IT i've seen alot of computers with weird problems, 99% of the time its nothing serious.

Btw, if her HP has factory installed OS, when you boot it up, you should see an option to go into hardware diagnostics mode.

USB plug in drives tend to get their letters squashed by other hard-wried devices. Go into Disk Management (RC My computer, Manage, Select disk management) You should see the USB drive listed, and it should display the multiple partitions. One or more may duplicate the drive letter you already have in use. RC the partition you can't see, change drive letter, change, pick a letter, OK, ignore warnings, open up the drive in explorer.

HP products aren't the best due to poor engineering. I worked in IT at a company and we order over 100 new HP desktop computers. Over half of them didn't work right out of the box. IBM makes the best notebook computers. Lenovo is the way to go!
