I drive my car like a maniac, no oil cooler, have JB1 and I've never seen the temp go over 255

I live in Miami where it never goes below 90 and as you all know has a constant humidity of 100000%

Non oil cooler cars WILL run hotter than OC equipped at the track. If you have an auto tranny, you are at risk of running hot enough to shut down if the ambient conditions are right. I saw it again just 4weeks ago at our local school.

There is a direct correlation between how hard the car is driven, the ambient temps and how hot it gets. Me, as an instructor, with a 6MT plus oil cooler, the OT will run 285 at about 85 ambient. With my GF driving the car in C group, the OT runs 265-270. The faster you go, the hotter it gets.
You don't have to say anything more; our experiences differ, it happens. I don't think either one of us can speak for every auto owner without an oil cooler. I definitely agree they run hotter when driven hard for long periods of time, but I've still not seen one go into limp.

FWIW guys, just because someone's experience doesn't correlate directly with yours doesn't mean they are lying or it didn't happen. None of us can watch all non OC cars at all times on all tracks. I am sure plenty of people without OC's track their cars without problems. Higher likelihood of overheating? Absolutely. Guaranteed? No...

OP, you should only be worried if you are a fast driver going to extended DE sessions. daily driving, don't worry about it

EDIT: i'm pretty sure the people who do not run into heat problems at the track are novice users, or users who live in colder climates.

Nevermind; you guys are right. All non-OC cars will overheat when driven at the track by anyone who isn't blind or retarded or living in Antarctica.

I didn't say or imply you were lying or your actual experience isn't factual. Neither is it my experience vs. yours. Neither did I say limp was guaranteed. However, what I did say, is regardless of our actual experiences there is more than enough evidence reported here and elsewhere of non-oil cooler equipped cars running hot and hot enough to go into limp that it is a relevant point to the OP's question. He wanted to know if there was any concerns with not having an oil cooler. If you don't have an oil cooler and you track your car it is absolutely something to be concerned about. Heck, if you do have an oil cooler and you track your car it is something to be concerned about.

Got it, I agree. It did concern me, and it still does enough that I watch my temps when pushing the car. BMW Canada offered to retrofit an OC for me and I declined, but if I do overheat I'll take them up on it.

It sure seems like my 08 with the OC runs warmer in general than my 07 without it. Maybe under extended track conditions the 08 might run cooler. But it seems like in normal driving, there must a thermostat that keeps it running hotter than my 07 without the OC.

I had an issue with my car, Sept 2006 build, no oil cooler. I was seeing temps of 265-275 during normal cruising and would hit 290-300 doing back to back WOT pulls. At the track (road course) I would do about two laps and the car would go into a heat induced limp mode. A few other guys I know would have the same issues. We weren’t willing to pay BMW or Dinan $2000+ for an oil cooler so I developed one myself. I recommend an oil cooler if you plan on tracking your car or if your temps run high. Really it comes down to your driving style.

Going in for my OC retrofit next week (Oct. 06 build, sport pkg., steptronic). Very curious to see how this will help cool my car in the mountains. On spirited runs...all 2nd and 3rd gear...up some mountain passes, I can easily hit 280-290 degrees. Have never actually limped because of temps though.

You know, if they offered to do it, I would seriously think about taking them up on it. It is strictly my opinion but I think the lack of an OC could impact resale value (if not actual value, perceived value) in the future. Of course if you lease, who cares. But think about it. 2 years from now, once this issue has been hashed to death, and someone is down to choosing between two cars, one with OC, one without, would you want to be the one without?

That's a good point. The way I figured it was this; I plan on keeping my car long enough that by the time I sell it re-sale will be virtually the same across all trims. Hell, I might drive it into the ground. If I was going to sell it in a year I'd consider taking them up on their offer for sure. The other thing keeping me from doing it is that I have 33k trouble free km on it (literally, no issues whatsoever) so I am a little paranoid about them pulling out the manifold and dicking with the car. I've yet to have a heat problem, but if I do odds are I';ll get the retrofit.

When I got my car and realized there was no cooler (this was back when no one had even mentioned "oil cooler") I made a fuss and was offered the retrofit after a few phone calls. This was in January 2007, so it's been awhile. Hell, maybe they wouldn't even do it for me now, although I am convinced I could make it happen.

Yikes! Well for comparison, on those same mountains, with aggressive pulls the most I have ever seen is 265 with my 6MT, sport, with OC on a really hot day. Hopefully you should see a noticeable improvement. The auto tranny really adds heat loading to the cooling system.

I have 2007 335 e90 with 9/07 build date. I have zsp, no aftermarket tune, and no oil cooler. Until they upgraded me to the stinking 29.2 progman, my temps were about 240-250 (no prob). Now, with 29.2, my temps run about 15-20 deg hotter, but still no limps.

Which is even more strange to me that they installed the OC in the early 6MT but not the AT, when obviously the AT would heat things up even more. Maybe they just thought us AT people wouldn't be pushing our cars like that.

09/07 build with ZSP and you don't have an oil cooler? Did you mean 09/06? I have never heard of anyone with a post 03/07 build getting a 335i (E90&E92) with ZSP and not getting the oil cooler.
