Its the first time in a while that a non M 3 Series has closed the gap far enough to be equal or even a threat to the M3. A 335i is comparable to an e46 M3 and a Tweaked 335i can go up against a e92 M3... pretty cool I say...

The cockiness is drivers attitude. I'm just happy to be part of BMW's "boosted" generation!!!

That's the key to it all right there...it's called 'excitement!' The tuning possibilities have given a new found excitement for the 3-series that it's really never had before...the power of real, highly competitive performance!

i came from 2 e46 cars, a '00 323i and a '01 330i. i was also an active lurker in a number of enthusiast forums for the e46. i recall seeing a bunch of "kill stories" and "3 series vs..." threads in those forums too but they dont come close to the level of arrogance that i have been seeing in this forum. back then, the top engine in the non-M 3 series was a 2.8 or 3.0 liter I6 which made 190-225 hp. it was sufficient and peppy enough to barely keep pace with its competition (A4, C-class, G35, IS300, TL) and powerful "lesser" cars.

most of those threads would result in one of the following conclusions

it is not a drag racing car

buy a mustang if you like to drive fast in a straight line

it might lose in a straight line race but should win in the twisties

basically, it sounded like alot of excuses. 3'er owners would get all defensive about how it would lose to "lowly" cars like mustangs, TLs, G35, etc. everyone preached about how 3'ers are not designed to be drag racers and you bought one for the combination of handling, road feel, semi-luxury and prestige.

this doesnt seem like the case anymore. many of the threads in the turbo section make the 335 sound like a drag racing champ and it will destroy cars that are higher up on the food chain. lots of talk about how it goes 0-60 mph and 1/4 mile in xxx seconds.

to me, it is like a 180 degree change in perpective in BMW's entry-level model (until the 1-er anyway...)

dont get me wrong, i love the huge improvements in power and speed in the top of the line non-M 3-er. some of the cockiness can be justified because it is a very fast car and with minimal modding, can be even faster... but i just think some of the members in this forum are overly cocky. i think these members may be new BMW owners and have not owned a conservatively powered previous generation 3'er. may i go as far as saying many of these members may be previous owners of STi's and EVO's?

okay... end rant.
I disagree on one point. I think most of us who came from reasonably fast cars (Evo, STI, Cobra, Supra) know this car is not the baddest thing on the street and don't brag too much about it.

It's more the people who have had conservatively powered cars (dare i say E46's and such) who think this thing has more power than the space shuttle that do a lot of bragging. Probably because they've never owned anything really fast and don't have to make excuses about getting their asses handed to them by Mustangs and what not anymore.

I came from a 2000 323CI with 170 crank HP, so I think the tuned 335 has as much power as the space shuttle.

The modded 335 is just a more well rounded car now.

I'd like the OP to post some specific threads on this forum to backup his claim - and not the ones where you see a 16 year old new poster talking about his new 335i his daddy bought em. Because the people on the forum run those people off anyhow...

I really don't think this thread is warranted.

Corvettes, GTOs, RS4s, R8s, M3s, any AMGs...I have read threads where 335s have "owned" all of the above cars. The OP does have a point, but I agree with hotrod that those who have come from powerful cars in their past don't make as big a deal about the 335's performance and potential and often their "reality checks" do give a bit of balance on the forum (or lead to a flame war - guess it depends on the day).

OP doesn't need to do that. There's lots of kill stories all over. And, off all the subforums, the turbo one is the most immature. fact

There's nothing wrong with a kill story. This is a bmw enthusiast forum. What kind of enthusiast doesn't like to talk about how he raced X car and beat it?

I think OP has a good question, SFLGATOR has a good response.

IMO, the combination of a little more straight line performance vs competition (compared to earlier 3 series), the ability to make meaningful gains in hp/tq, and people pay much more attention to the basic performance numbers.

I don't race, but I think many are happy to be able to beat 1/3 or 1/2 the cars they think of (without tuning, with tuning, respectively), whereas earlier 3 series was further down the food chain.

I find "performance car news 0-60" times gives a perspective of where your car is in the food chain....

Wow, thanks. I really like that web site and list of cars with their 0-60mph, costs, and other data. FWIW, as we all should know by now, tuned 335i's (like PROcede v2/v3, JB2/3, etc.) do 0-60mph in ~ 4.1-4.3 sec. on a regular basis. So, I guess for a $50k car + inexpensive piggyback tune, this car is one hell of a 'great bang for your buck' and runs with some of the most expensive supercar sportscars out there...but we knew that already.

Not sure about the 335s but I have heard that m3 drivers are cocks. In fact one of the m3 drivers has broken the cock-o-meter.

To annoy the OP I’m dress like an M3 driver. BTW I think the STI and the EVO are two of the best cars for the money period.

We're all proud of our rides, and we express that pride in forums like this. It doesn't matter what ride you've got.
Got a Prius? Brag about leaving the V8's in the dust as they run out of gas and money. This human behavior hasn't changed at all. We just brag about something different now, since BMW has given us something different.

My DD does the 1/4 in 12 and a half with a baby seat in the back. It also has 4 doors, can rocket to 60 in 4.5 seconds and gets 28 mpg on the freeway cruising at 75 mph. It's sexy, German and impresses the ladies.

What's not to get excited about?
