However given a clean design, I would say relocating the water expansion tank and putting in a shroud + cold intake air divert + biggest cone that can fit would seem to be the most optimal design. I am surprised non of the specialist tuners have come up with something. presumably because redesigning the expansion tank would take some level of engineering over a pipe..
Because it wouldn't be a good dollar-to-horsepower ratio, and wouldn't be profitable.

Your info says you have an e92 M3 but I will assume you're talking about a N55. The expansion tank is on the turbo side. Moving the intake over there will cause their to be more heat going into the intake. The run will be shorter however.

Not if the area was boxed off in a shroud and fed by cold air.

Yes this relates to my N55 e90.

Given the crazy prices for these things the cost of a aluminium expansion tank or even a more Exotic material and hoses it wouldn't be that cost prohibitive, it would however increase the complexity of installation.

It would offer the shortest run and easy direct fed cold air, chance to have the biggest filter which is ultimately what determines air flow. Running a pipe across the top of the engine isn't ever going to be good on heat!

I've hade a lot of M car and still do, I had a heavily modified e92 m3 back in 2010-2013 used it allot at Europe on race tracks. At the moment the fleet includes a couple of e46 m3s a e91 330i and e90 n55..

I have heard some people used the 335D duct since it goes to the passenger side of the engine bay.
