You also want the narrowest tire and smallest possible rim size with winter tires, so the 18's or 19's most people like to run in the summer wouldn't work as well even with winter tires.

+1. I drove my coupe with summer tires in snow once last season -- not a good idea. I was lucky that snow started accumulating right before I had to take my exit. Never doing that again...
I'm looking to buy some winter setup (wheel+tire) myself.. I can't manage to find good looking wheels in 17". I wish they made 17" CSL or M3/M5 reps. Apparently this place in Toronto is selling them.. http://toronto.en.craigslist.ca/tor/pts/912984836.html

So I think all season tires are perfect in that respect and either Yokohamas or Michelins(if you want to spend a little more) will do great job.
I bought Yokohamas Advan S4s for my Infiniti G35S 6MT and was very disappointed in them. When there is snow on the ground and you start from a complete stop on an uphill, the only direction you will move is downhill. I did a 360 once (unwillingly) going about 25MPH in 3" of snow. Fortunately, there was no one around me when it happened. Even in warm weather and slightly rainy conditions, the grip was not there. I had no confidence driving on those tires as you can tell.

I've got an 09 335i coming in January and will have dedicated winter tires for my car.

I agree, all seasons help a bit but really are not to much better, especially when they are high performance all season. I like having dedicated winters, I feel safer then in an AWD.
