It is important for you guys to aknowledge, that this is not a vehicle in development, but a drive system. There will not be a gran coupe electric i4M.
It is an i4 M50 with G80 suspension components slapped on to it. It's a technology testmule.
Number of doors, or generally the design is irrelevant. All that matters, is the drive system beneath and the first car to carry that, will look completely different. Also, it is probably 4-6 years away.

I don't think I've ever read something with more fluff words in it before. Seems like they are trying to mask the fact that electric vehicles are not engaging just fast, more like an appliance. Too me they just don't have any soul or character... I hope there will still be ICE versions.

I don't get the marketing concept. You are happily driving along in your calm moment, going with the flow, and then you see this car doing some weird donut, shredding its tires like a monster. Then it starts pursuing you down the highway. This makes you smile? I would call 911 and start videoing the driver immediately.

The issue is most consumers either don't want EVs or cannot afford EVs, and even fewer consumers want performance related EVs. So while it seems great that companies are spending billions in R&D to get out ahead of it, the consumer demand isn't there, it's not organic it's an artificial push by government. So these companies will spend a ton on R&D and production just to sell hundreds of cars, and end up losing money.

It would easlily be 5,000+ lbs. That is the current state of battery tech. The amount of cells needed for any decent power level, leads to very heavy battery packs.

To get 300+hp power, you need a 75kwh battery pack minimum. Take the base Taycan for example, that has a 79kwh battery with 320hp. It weighs in at 4600lbs. You want 500hp+, the Taycan GTS has a 94kwh battery pack and weighs in over 5000lbs. i4 M50 weighs in at 5018lbs, these things are porkers.

We are many years away from building all electric true sports cars( meaning a relatively light small rwd sports car with power and range). The battery tech just isn't there yet.

This is incredible!! I will be holding onto my F82 for a while. I'm so happy I can skip the whole horrific tragedy of the G generation.

Maybe I'm getting old but when you've owned so many cars over your lifetime the burgles the pops the bangs all the noise that petrol engines make it's old and tired. It's actually very annoying when you hear crappy cars with horrible cheap exhaust driving around tidying up your neighborhood. Personally I can't wait for full electropication something new and exciting. No more having to go to the gas station, I am absolutely can't wait and I will be definitely the first people in line to get one.

I will continue enjoying my M4 why Bmw is working on the future of BMW M.

They still need to get the sports car thing correct. My wife has an i4 M50 en route. When I test drove it, I thought the 5,000+lb i4 M50 did a decent impression of a 4000lb M340i xdrive, from a driving dynamics perspective (of course, acceleration was no contest). That gives me faith and hope.

Also important to point out its not an i4 M50. It's the i4/4er GC chassis with M bits and quad motor.

The quad motor setup is arguably the key takeaway here vs suspension bits.

Quad motors are not easy to develop fwiw. I did time in the EV startup space and we failed to bring quad motors to market

It is fine for general and spirited road driving(which represents the driving of majority of BMW buyers). But take that to the track, 5000+lbs is going to eat up things like the brakes.

We are a decade+ away from a MkV Supra size EV, sub 3500lbs, rwd, 350hp(with decent range).

BMW track rats will be waiting awhile for BMW to produce something for track days. Solid state batteries will be the breakthrough. Porsche has said Cayman will be all electric by 2025, lets see what they can come up with. I have my doubts, there is only so much Porsche can do with current state of battery tech.

I am looking forward to the ev choices we will have in 5-6 years. We are on our third ev and it really is a better way to get around. True track cars are still way off but that Porsche prototype looks very promising. Hell the rally cross race was intriguing too.

I'm sure this tech will be objectively impressive on a future model and make unheard of amounts of power compared to ICE BMWs. But I'm not so sure what will be the differentiating factor between this and every other heavy EV sedan? Handling and software is about all they can do, but even then they will be restricted by current battery tech. At least Porsche is intending on making the EV Boxster "mid-engined" with the battery placement.

I get the feeling it'll be bloated like all electric cars, but I'm really liking the Targa-vibe. I think BMW can pull it off better than Mercedes' or Tesla.

Unfortunately, that and 7,000bhp can't overcome all the other awful design cues.
