If you’re in San Diego, this won’t help you, but an email from UP Steam Club that showed up in my inbox this morning will help those between Wyoming and Texas who want to see UP’s Big Boy. Here’s an excerpt:
“The "Heartland of America Tour" will start Thursday, Aug. 29 in Cheyenne, Wyoming, and include nine additional states: Arkansas, Colorado, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Texas. The eight-week tour concludes in late October. Scheduled Display Days: Sunday, Sept. 8: Rochelle, Illinois (Chicago metro area) Sunday, Oct. 6: Houston, Texas Thursday/Friday, Oct. 10-11: Fort Worth, Texas Additional route details with locations and times will be shared closer to the tour.” |

Quote:
"The original bridge was replaced in 1876 by an iron bridge. Engineers installed guy wires on both the wooden bridge and its iron replacement in an attempt to stabilize the structures. Frankly, the iron bridge did not look like an improvement over the original." "A dangerous crossing (it swayed in the wind) that required trains to slow down to 4 mph." "The metal one had a couple revisions that didn't prove to be a great improvement. It was totally dismantled in 1901 in favor of another route." |

I'm in the 4 Corners, and have ridden both the Durango & Silverton and the Cumbres & Toltec - both great trips!
However, I have to show the Nevada Northern Railway's #93 - an Alco 2-8-0... I took part in their "Be the Engineer" program last October - got to drive the thing for about 2 hours. |

This engine was mentioned earlier in the thread. It'll be passing through my area in early Sept. Might have to go grab some pics as it goes by.
