Hmm......

So i thought that bhp was torque x rpm.......

Our peak torque comes low down so i would expect that figure to be fine.

So say your turbo is having problems boosting higher up the range, torque is tailing off and as such, so is your bhp.

Sound theory?

Turbo's?

I can understand where your coming from you don't buy a diesel for petrol economy, if you buy a 335d maybe but I'd mostly imagine a 320d driver will have different buying motives, in most cases economy playing it's role more.

I don't like to even think what mpg my car does I'm guessing probably a bit below 20 but if it was a 320d I would be disappointed if it was returning 22 even when hooning.

Yes im sure thats correct if they ONLY use the car for commuting say 60 trouble free miles each way. You would easily see over 40mpg.

But of you drive quite rapido and use ull throttle a bit and also have alot of town driving with your shorter daily commute i dont think you will see anywhere near bmw figures and mid to high 20's will be the best you will get.

Surely though if real world, lets face it we all like to put our foot down is like mid - high 20's you're going to get almost the same out of a 335d? Not sure what 335i owners get but I couldn't get my 330Ci (E46) below 19 no matter how hard I tried and believe me I tried hard

Normally got 22, least was 19 and most was 29 and BMW said these were low figures, not that far off the 320d really and you're paying more for the diesel fuel too, says to me unless you like the diesel more than the petrol that the diesel is just not economically viable, or am I totally missing something here?

Thats pretty tragic like mate.........

Mile for mile........a 2.2 Accord whooped the bmw in both performance and mpg stakes...

That is based on a 2 mile town drive followed by 10 motorway miles and then another mile to my work.

Based on getting to 70, slotting 6th and not moving at all and not driving like a loon round the town as there is sheet ice everywhere. Tootling.

No way, is 20 something acceptable.

I am positive that a 2-3 litre petrol wouldnt manage that

So what you are saying is that your (infinitely more powerful) 335d is getting the same if not more than my 320......

And by the looks of your provile banner, you dont exactly take it handy

I am sure if i did a burn out in mine then a viper would prolly have more economy than it.

LOL....
I was averaging 18 for a while. Went upto 24-25 during and since the ring trip i went on last year.

Have you thought about tuning your 320d? this may help by a couple of MPG.

Where are you located?

I would expect 28mpg minimum out of a 2.0l Diesel, no matter how it's driven and who it's made by.

My remapped pre-LCI 535d averaged 27-28mpg and that's a bigger heavier car with an auto and a lead foot driving it... oh, and +2cyl !

Does sound like these 320d's in question have a fault and I would get them looked at before remapping.

Hell.... my average in the M3 is 23mpg !

You are aware that there is 150hp version of the 320d out there? In Germany/Austria, we call it the fleet-edition: it is the company-car version and is offered a "few" grand cheaper than the 163hp 320d. Would surprise me if you have one of those...

The pre facelift model (05) was 150bhp. I've not found any reference online yet to a 55+ model at 150bhp and you'd think it would be *more* expensive for BMW to maintain two engines in the same new body for the sake of 13hp.

Even on TIG or realoem.com online it shows one engine type.

How can i confirm this?

cheers

I know this is german but check out these links:

Car 1

Car 2

Car 3

BMW does not have to manage anything during maintenance - only in the factory when the car gets produced, the FE get a different motor management software that restricts the power output...

The only reason why BMW do is because they offer these FE at an attractive price to company - it basically justifies why the car is about 2-3k cheaper. Attached is the official pdf from bmw - it is for the newer models where the downsizing goes from 177hp to 163hp...

That's pretty interesting then. Same engine, different software, i wonder why, especially if a less powerful engine results in worse MPG which would be the opposite of what you want out of a fleet car.

I wonder if the same applies with UK cars, more to the point how would you be able to check it out?

cheers

The only way you can tell is when you look at the extras that your comes with, there is one extra called: reduced power output (or something similar in english).. basically list would look like this:

217 Active steering
320 Model code deletion
337 M-Sportspackage
609 Navi Prof
xxx Reduced Power Output
633 Bluetooth preparation

etc.....

Just doing up the ratchet straps too much can make 5-10% difference in the figures, not to mention air temp in the work shop etc.

The wheel torque is the MEASURED quantity, not calculated. It is the only quantity the Dyno can actually measure, that along with wheel speed. BHP is not 'measurable' only 'calculable'.

From this a straigh calc can be done to give WHEEL BHP, but then it get vague and you / the operator / the dyno needs to estimate losses to back-calculate flywheel torque thus BHP.

You need the wheel BHP figure from the dyno to see what loss figures they have used, then you can compare apples with apples...

Check your ownership papers (V5). It say's in KW what your power is e.g.:-

90KW / 120HP

110KW / 150HP

I only have the new keeper part of the V5 to hand, nothing about power on there. it has 158g/km CO2 which is normal i think.

Is there a site i can look it up directly based on registration? The dvla check just gives me what i know already (no KW or HP) and i don't want to pay to find out (and perhaps find out that the information isn't on there)

I don't have the original list of extras. It's an MSport touring, would they offer a fleet version in msport (if it's all about saving money)...

thanks!
