I guess my biggest concern with it, despite it being very cool in concept...
is that the phone isnt 100% consistent. What if I am adjusting the settings, and the phone has a hiccup (plenty of apps dont work 100% perfect...even native apple apps like text messaging)...I fear my engine going nuts or throwing a code for no reason do you have any ideas for failsafes?

But anyway, to answer your question, I would say based on what I know so far, that if you had a hiccup in the middle of adjusting a setting or something, the command either a) would not get sent and you would have no change, b) only half the command would get sent and nothing would happen (a WHOLE command must be sent), or c) the whole command would be sent and executed successfully. It's not like you're trying to bump the UT to 75 and all the sudden it gets set to 100. But thats a ways down the road

No worries, mate. Back when this was first discussed, I said we'd do it as a paid project and was excoriated for lack of 'community spirit' or somesuch.
Yeah, it takes time to build useful software so it's fair for the people who do it to get paid. I am 100% in favor of you charging $$$ for your product. Quote:

I'll be shooting to have this in the App Store. I think limiting to jailbroken phones would be unfortunate. For what I have planned, the iPhone already has the functionality without hacking it anyway.

I was hesitant to post what I have because I was scared of questions like this. The honest answer is, I don't know. I'll have a better idea as I move forward. My real job has me swamped right now and this is a free time thing, but hopefully I'll have some time to hammer down shortly.

Huh? That's essentially what this is (among other things). Did you see the vid? You'll still need the hardware though.

There's already wireless comm to the keyfob for map switching. It's a substantial project to port the PROcede s/w to mobile devices & piggyback on the extant wireless comm in a reliable way. What's the total addressable market for this app? Some subset of the total number of PROcede users for the 335i, Evo, & STi. Given that the PROcede is a $1k piece, it would be tough to beat more than $50-100 out of each customer, if that. So, having to port the app twice (locked-down, utterly proprietary iPhone + the rest of the universe that can run JavaME) would be, what, maybe 6 staff months of work (if you get the source code as a reference implementation and the code isn't crap). That's 50-75k for a good developer. If you can sell > 1,000 of these, you stand a chance of making money. Selling it through the iStore just means that Steve Jobs & Co. get a piece of the action w/o adding any value since you will find your customers through the forums and word of mouth better than the iStore. If there were other cool & money-spinning products that could be upsold, then this could be a worthwhile. </startup geek> |
